cancelled recon

Hi peeps just had to let of steam! 10 Min’s ago had a phone call from the hospital to say my reconstruction op has been put back a week from the 24Th May to the 31st May because of an emergency!! how can an emergency be four weeks away!! so upset and angry right now, if it happens again i will just cancel the whole op completely! I’ve only waited eight years after all! do these hospitals not realise we Skye ourselves up for these ops and count the days, obviously they don’t ;-( x

No - this is my fear also that recon will cease to be a priority in times of austerity…don´t cancel but it gives you space to check it is right for you.

I do know exactly how you feel. My diep op was cancelled the day before I was due to go in. I was devasted. You are right that we get all psyched up for this op. I was in tears when the ps’s secretary phoned me. Luckily I was given a date two weeks later and all went ahead. Hang on in you will get there and it will be worth it.

Hello girls

Maybe I could tell you my story that may have resulted in someone else having surgery unfortunately delayed. I had a mastectomy June 2011 and followed on with chemo. Unfortunately in Oct there appeared a very quickly growing recurrence (in spite of being on chemo) on the mastectomy site - very visible. Then followed CAT and Bone scans and then a date given ( which was 3 weeks later) to have the tumour removed along with a lot of surrounding tissue and requiring an LD flap. I appreciated how quickly this was arranged - but realise that this meant someone else was put back and felt for their disappointment.

Sookie

Sookie - you make an excellent point, thank you for sharing your experience with us.

After the path report from my biopsy was available my mastectomy was brought forward by a week which no doubt meant someone else being bumped off the surgeon’s list and having to wait longer.

I have also had the boot on the other foot. My prophylactic oophorectomy was put back by more than a month - very upsetting and frustrating at the time but if it meant that someone with ovarian cancer or similar got their operation sooner then that’s fine by me.

Sascha you say that “my fear also that recon will cease to be a priority in times of austerity”. That used to worry me but I’ve been told I have the rest of my live to decide if I want a delayed reconstruction and I have that in writing.

Really sorry shoez. Think there are quite a few doctors who could do with a few lessons in empathy.
I was due to have a consultation about reconstruction this week, but it was cancelled because they discovered my cancer is no longer stable (I’m a stage 4 peep, and they discovered C had gone to my spine), so quite disappointing. Another fairly cruel thing was that after they told us about the spread, they made my husband and I sit in a waiting room with all the other C patients, to wait for a doctor to discuss radiotherapy next week. We both found it very hard trying not to cry for two hours.

On no, gutted for you as know how much you were prepared for it. The only thing I can say is that its hard but we arent the priority, others need surgery to rid them of the cancer, I know I had to wait 5 weeks for my masectomy and the 2nd one was over a year as was voluntary. However, I know, after being messed about for around 2.5 years about recon and back and forward how hard it is and I also know how much I nearly backed out.

Please dont, I know you have your bag sorted - just hold out that bit longer and I promise its so worth it xxxx

Hi Shoez

The same has happened to me - my recon date was 14 May and has been for quite some time but I got a letter on Thursday to say I had a new date of 21st May. It’s only a week but I had planned things with work and family around the original date and you do get a mind set of it all being over with. I rang the surgeons secretary to ask why the date had been changed and as per other posts there was an urgent mastectomy that had to take priority and as I was only a recon then I was the obvious choice to be moved. Not happy about it but I fully understand that the mastectomy should take priority. I’m just hoping they don’t move me again !

Best wishes

Jayleigh

Jayleigh, if work are not expecting you in that week, I would be sorely tempted just to go on holiday for the week  Can be quite nice in May! You might run into probs later with the sick note not matching up, but maybe you could get the GP to say you were too stressed to work or something?

Thanks everyone for you feedback, yeah i do understand i’m not priority! but after being messed about for 8yrs thought that it closure!! feeling much better now and accepted these things happen for a reason! its just i had )like everyone else does)made specific arrangements for that day, so i have now had to re-arrange everything again! but never mind eh! 4 weeks next Thursday fimgers crossed, take care and thanks again everyone, xx Lisaf how are you doing now love? x

Shoez - all the very best for the re-arranged date.

Fingers crossed everything goes ahead fr you on your new date Shoez. I know what you mean about all the specific arrangements. I had just got back from putting my dog into kennels when I had my cancellation phonecall. I then had to go and collect him and still had to pay for the day!
