Catastrophising - new diagnosis

Hi all,

Just looking for a bit of reassurance I think. I am waiting on MRI (2 Dec) after being diagnosed last week - ER+, PR+ and HER- in lump and lymph node. The last few days I feel like I am getting symptoms everywhere - tingly skin on stomach, pains in both breasts, sore throat - so basically convincing myself it’s everywhere.

When actually a week ago I was running lots and doing boot camp 3 times a week and feeling really healthy.

Is this normal or something I should flag with the BC nurse? Waiting is utterly horrendous. Although we have put the christmas tree up early as trying to keep distracted.

Feel like I am losing my mind. I am working still to keep busy and save sick leave, but can WFH so basically half arseing it for a while.

Hi @rubytuesday

I’m sorry you have to be here, but welcome!

I would definitely mention what you are feeling to your BCN but remember, our minds can do funny things when we are scared and under stress. When I was diagnosed I got pains in my arm and back and convinced myself it was everywhere (it wasn’t). I was recalled from my first mammogram after treatment and started feeling tenderness in my ribs so again convinced myself of the worst (turns out what they wanted to have a look at again wasn’t even on that side!). While it felt very real at the time, both times these symptoms disappeared as soon as I had my op/was given the all clear.

Hopefully your BCN will be able to provide some reassurance. x

Hi Ruby, I felt exactly the same as you. Every ache or pain I feel in my body I assume the worst. I started getting lower tummy cramps, almost convinced myself I had ovarian cancer and then I came on my period! The power of our minds is crazy and anxiety will enhance everything you feel

Definitely give your nurses a call though, they will want to know and they will be able to reassure you.

A lot of people advise learning some mindfulness meditations. Trying to calm your body as much as possible as your adrenaline will be super high and that will enhance everything also

I was diagnosed with ER+ HER2 negative so we are in a similar boat. My nodes are clear on scans but I will get confirmation after my op which is book for 11th Dec.

Im just playing the waiting game as calm and positive as can be. Its not easy haha
