Cellulitis as side effect?

Hi all,

I have had a few days of bad pain (really bad pain!)in my shin and foot. I put this down to one of my ‘outbreaks’ of bone mets pain which I seem to get every so often - for example I had a really painful left hip about a month ago that lasted for about a week then miraculously faded away.

However a couple of days ago I noticed a red rash on my foot that looked like cellulitis which GP confirmed (I had cellulitis badly after my original reconsruction op about 12 years ago.) He prescribed antibiotics, Flucloxacillin. I also contacted hospital who did blood test and white cells look OK. I have been told to contact hospital if things get worse.

I wondered if anyone else has experience of cellulitis as side effect of bone mets or Xeloda? I ahave been on Xeloda for about a year. I thought you only got cellulitis from infected wound but apparently not.

Why do these things always crop up on bank holiday week-end? It means the people I usually talk to are not there…

Hi Lottie

Hi Lottie

Sorry to hear about your mysterious foot-rash – I’ve been on Xeloda for over five years, with the usual hand/foot syndrome problems, but not cellulitis, as far as I can tell. I do have an intermittant rash (more like blisters) on one foot (mainly on sole), and have also had cellulitis in my lymphoedema arm – each very different, e.g. cellulitis came up suddenly with much swelling, redness, heat & pain, while my foot-rash is more low-key, and not painful at all. Had the same anti-Bs for my arm cellulitis last year as you’ve had – sorted my arm but didn’t do anything for my feet. You might want to ring your “chemo-hotline” if you have one at your hospital – they’d be able to tell you if you’re having a bad reaction to Xeloda. Hope things are better for you soon.

Just to let people know, I visited the hospital yesterday and they upped my antibiotics and my foot is now improving. I had a bit of a scare when the doc said maybe I should stay in hospital and get IV antibiotics, but she agreed I could go home with tablets.

Hi Lottie

Glad you were able to get something sorted out, hope the pain continues to improve

Hi Lottie

Good to hear the higher dose anti-Bs are sorting your foot out, and glad you were able to avoid in-patient IV treatment. Hope you’ll have great improvement soon.
