check up appointments

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if you could tell me when you go for yor check up eith 6 monthly or yearly once all treament is over, what do they do at your appointment??
I am just asking as I was diagnosed in September 2005 and had chemo, radio, herceptin and am still on Tamoxifen but when my GP or other people in the hospital ask what they do at my 6 month check ups they seem surprised when I say a bc nurse ust asks me how I am feeling and how is work going.
Is this normal wta happens at allof your check up appoinments I would be extremley grateful to hear.
I wish you all a very Merry Christmas
Love Clairemm x x

Hi Claire. I usually get one of the docs on my onc’s team - asks me how I am and check my bloods are ok. I can ask them any questions I have and that’s about it. Usually have to wait a few hours for apt which is long and boring but that’s life. Merry christmas to you too. x

Hi Teacup thank you for your reply do they do blood test on you every time you go for a check up? and what are they looking for in the blood tests?
I was told by a lady that her mum use to have blood tests done and it was called a cancer chaser is that what you have? when I aked my Bc nurse about it they said they had never heard of it has anyone on here???
They dont even do blood tests on me so I am keen to see what others also put
Thank you Love Clairemm x x

Hi Cl;aire

I was diagnosed Dec 05, pretty crap prognosis so spent every 3 weeks with the cons onc for 6 months, then we agreed 6 weekly for the nect 6 months, quarterly for year 2 amd now half yearly. I have thorough examination every time, I am really prodded in my mast scar line (although now have recon after 2 years), armpits, other boob, collar bone, neck, lungs and liver. Had bloods checked thru 8 chemos +18 herceptin + echo’s on heart, also made to have loads of scans before recon which were bloody awful, but thankfully NED.

Now just have the 2 onc appts (still the same prodding) and now demoted to registras (which I feel is a good sign) + 1 with the breast cons + 1 mammogram and still under the PS for the time being. so still loads of prodding within 12 months. I have had bloods checked twice this year due to feeling period pains + really lethargic lately and putting on weight. awaiting that result, have told GP I dont like tamoxifen, hope he doesn’t want to start seeing me too.

In Oxfordshire regular bloods usually ceck on cancer markers, this would give indications if something going on inside, however they dont usually check once immed treatment over unless getting symptons, and the way I look at it, why go looking for it if you dont have recurring aches or niggles.

All 3 cons give me thorough examination which is more than enough for me.

take care

meant to add, havent seen my BC nurse since needing a new prosthesis, she is pretty crap round hbere, can actually get hold of Cons Onc before her. and thats what I choose to do if I need an appt.

Hi Claire

I have my 1st check up next June ( 1 year after dx) with surgeon which will include mammograms on both breasts. My onc said he would see me in Jan (6 months after dx) for a manual examination if I wanted him to, but there was absolutely no evidence that it did any good. He said it is only offered to women because many of them “panic” at the thought of not seeing someone for a year. He said I could do the manual exam myself in the shower and it would be just as effective! So I have decided to wait for the June appt.
