Chemo Curl - is this true?

Hey Cherub - that sounds great !! Mine has come back greyish but looks as though it may get darker. Hairdresser gave me some treatment to put on the brillo pad see if it softens up. The shampoos for silver hair sound good. And I’ll have to pinch my daughters straighteners. Can’t wait for it to get a bit longer and not wear my wig. I’m going to my friends in France in April and don’t think I’ll wear it there, though to get through passport control I think it will have to come with me !

I always had dead straight hair and waited with baited breath for my glorious post chemo curls to come. Pah!

All I got was ‘bird poo’ coloured hair -straight as a dye -but with a small kink at the back which promptly unkinked at about 1inch.

But I did get a very fetching (!) double crown which makes my hair stick up in a becoming sideways mohican every morning.

Oh the joys -and I promised myself that I would NEVER complain about my hair once it grew back…

I had an interesting hair experience - I had FEC chemo and used the cold cap which thankfully worked, although my hair thinned quite a bit on top, I never had to resort to my wig. My hair completely stopped growing (usually have it cut every 4 weeks) but when it did grow, came back really curly, just like Kylie’s. Guess it stayed that way for 2-3 months, and is now back to its’ normal horrid forties’ waves so need to use my hotbrush every morning. I just loved the “wash and go” style. My hair is very grey now round the sides and top, so am colouring it with L’Oreal Recital. Don’t know why some of us get curly hair with chemo - I never thought to ask my bc nurse. Any brain box out there know the answer?

Liz.

Hi Liz,
I don’t think anyone knows for certain why this happen.

The best explanation I’ve read is that chemo affects all rapidly growing cells more than slowly growing ones and hair follicles in your scalp grow rapidly. The ‘shock’ of chemo can alter the molecular structure of the cells in hair follicles so that they grow back with a ‘changed job description’ After some time without further jolts from more treatment, the hair follicles tend to settle into their old habits i.e curly goes back to straight or straight to curly.

I’m no brain box, just picked this up on a US breast cancer site.

Hi

when my hair first started to grow back it was blonde, then it turned dark, yes it was curly but ended up being as wavy/curly as Kylies. Now i have a years growth it is still wavy but I straighten it. I have not coloured it as I really like the colour is has come back too, I was blond before this all happened.

Love to all

I’ve lost my hair twice through chemo and both times it’s come back curly but exactly the same colour (dark brown).

Someone told me years ago that it comes back curly because it’s been damaged by the chemo but then that obviously isn’t the case for everyone!

well think about it when a babies hair grows in its always curly and then straightens out when it gets longer,my hair grew in wavy then straightened out to normal

Prior to chemo, I had very thick, long, wavy hair… After chemo it grew back curly, but the same colour. The curls weren’t evident until my hair was around 2 or 3 inches long, though…

I was bald at Christmas 2006, and now, 15 months later, I look like Jonathan Creek!

Hi all

Just to add my experience. My hair sounds very much like yours Magenta, was very long and wavy prior to chemo. Now I am just over a year post chemo, and have a head full of lovely soft curls, not had it cut yet either, as I want the length back. It didn’t start to curl till it was around 2 inch, but now I just wash it and scrunch through some Pantene curl defining mousse and it looks great, easy to manage.

Best of luck to all growing back their curly or straight new hair!
