chemo

hope you ladies don’t mind me posting here, I thought of posting on chemo forum but am comfortable in the TN forum now. Sis still weighing up options re treatment but I’ve advised her to go for it now as it will give her the best chance. Is it true that your hair grows back grey? I’ve never heard that. Would be interested to hear from anyone. I hope she chooses the treatment - it wiil be v hard for her but so many people on here have said it’s doable. I can’t see how she can decide otherwise but of course it’s her decision at end of day. So do let me know about the grey hair. Thank you ladies x

Hi Kittyhola

When my hair first grew back it was pretty grey in patches but it is now back to it’s usual colour - although I dye it as I already had gray bits. Everyone is different and you can dye your hair shortly after chemo if you use gentle dyes with no ammonia in them. We all seem to have a different experience of how our hair grows back - curly, straight but it seems to revert to it’s old self in time. Whatever it is a wonderful feeling when it does grow back.

I do hope this does not put her off getting her chemo. I am also triple negative and chemo is by far the best option for us.

All the best Anne x

Hi Kittyhola.

Chemo is hard but as you’ve said it is doable. I was also given the decision to have the chemo or not and the way I looked at it was I knew I didn’t want the cancer back ever again, so I felt I had to do everything I could to give me the best chance.

Re my hair, I did loose it all but it is growing back and it has changed colour but not grey. I’m 39 and I did have a little patch of grey before the chemo, well that’s gone and everyone keeps asking me if I’ve had my hair streaked blond but that’s just the way it’s come back, dirty blond with lighter blond streaks.

Wish your sis good luck from me and if she needs to chat just ask her to message me.

Take care of the both of you, Jo xoxoxo

Hi Kittyholla,

As the other ladies have said, hair can be a little different when it first comes back - mine was baby soft, and kinda streaky, like I’d had highlights, but once I’d had it cut a few times, it was back to the way it was before.
Also, and I think this is a very personal thing, I decided to shave my hair off once I’d started chemo - for me it was a small way to take back control I guess. My OH helped me, and it was something really quite special between us. Losing my eyelashes was more traumatic than losing my hair! Mascara is the only bit of make-up I use without fail, and I felt strange, sort of blank without it.
But it is all doable. And you and your sister will have loads of support here to help.
Take care x

my hair was dark brown with some grey but came back snow white and thicker than ever - still grows like wild fire now! Don’t really know what colour it is anymore as I’ve been dyeing it with a great herbal product ‘naturetint’ ever since.

mine had a few grey hairs before chemo so it was always dyed… when it grew back in it was quite fluffy with more grey than before but i dyed it when it was long enough and the new hair is back to normal with only a few greys but is much thicker than before… but still straight.

i didnt find the chemo too bad… maybe through my rose tinted spectacles but id say it was defintely worth tolerating it especially with TNBC.
