Chemotherapy after WLE and SNB clear

Hi Everyone,

I had my results on Wednesday after WLE and SNB and they got clear margins and no spread in the limph nodes so great news, however, the ductal invasive 12mm it was HER2 negative and Oestrogen/Progesteron negative. This is why they recommend chemotherapy to minimise the chance of it coming back. I was not expecting this after being told you have no more cancer, but I guess they know better, so waiting for oncology appointment now.

Anyone had a similar situation and how does it measure up, maybe someone had this quite a few years ago and have they had anymore problems?

Thank you,

Flossie

Hi Candyflossie,

You might find it helpful to talk this over with one of our Helpliners.  They’ll be able to offer tyou practical information and emotional support.  The opening times are 9-5 on weekdays and 10-2 on Saturdays.  The number is 0808 800 6000.

Very best wishes

Hi Flossie

I also got almost the same results as you on 6th June following a lumpectomy on 26th May. My lump was 7mm but was oestrogen negative don’t know about the other things you mentioned as it probably went out of my head when the mentioned that chemo word.

Having been told that the only cancer was in the lump they removed it seems a little strange to have to actually make yourself ill with chemotherapy.

Although I have great movement in my arm I have experienced from yesterday a swelling in the breast and a hardness alone the scar line. Was getting a bit concerned and decided to look on this site and am a little reassured that it seems to be quite common.

I have to have six session of chemo (3weeks apart) followed by three weeks of radiotherapy.

now I feel like I’m in limbo. Have no idea how long after the results you have to wait to start chemo and whether you have a gap before you start radiotherapy. If anyone knows would appreciate a heads up.

Thanks and good luck to you all

Hi Flossie.

I was quite taken aback when my surgeon said I had to have chemotherapy just a a safeguard to the cancer not returning. However when I saw my Oncologist I was given the happy news that chemo would not be necessary as this would only increase my chances of the cancer not returning by 2%. They use some kind of predict tool on the computer to assess this. It would have saved me two weeks of anxiety if they had waited until the oncology appointment to even mention the chemotherapy.

I have to have three weeks radiotherapy starting on the 9th July and hopefully will be discharged before my 70th birthday in August.

Good luck to you all

Hi Flossie,

I had a similar situation to you a couple of years ago although I had a mastectomy rather than WLE as I have a BRCA2 gene defect. The main difference is that I was ER+ but less so based on the histology results than they had thought from the biopsy, and the tumour had shrunk less than they expected with hormone therapy. It was suggested that I have chemotherapy as a precaution to minimise the risk of recurrence and I decided to do that. I had six cycles of FEC-T which finished July 2014. At the present moment I am well.

Hi Flossie,

First of all, huge hugs.  I had a very similar situation, originally diagnosed with DCIS then following  WLE, also an aggressive IDC within the lump. Shock doesn’t describe how I felt at the time. I am now about half way through chemo. Please feel free to private message me if you would like xxx
