Chemotherapy and IBS

Hello everyone!

Just wondering if anyone else has suggestions on limiting the impact on IBS of chemo? I had my first of 6 X FEC today - any ideas on best antisickness to use/avoid? I know all ibs is individual and it may depend on your type and triggers but any help might be useful. Will discuss my concerns with BCN when she rings tomorrow as well.

Cheers,
Marina

It probably depends on the symptoms you get from your ibs… Some. People tend to Get the runs others tend to get constipated or feel sick.

I usually end u pconstipated and regularly take laxatives but have to take extra ones on Chemo so I don’t get too bunged up… I’m on carbo and tax which doesn’t tend to cause too much nausea and sickness but does cos the runs… So have to put a halt on my laxatives after about a week when the tax trots kick in.

Granisetron is one of the anti sickness meds I get but it is very constipating… So usually stick with domperidone which is a bit milder.

Thanks Lulu!

I find the domperidone really good and am still using the demax steroid one - gave up on the Ondansetroncause haven’t really needed it! I go towards the runny side but medications either was can aggravate it - but bcn said the really bad bloating was probably just the chemo anyway! Are you using any naturopathic remedies to help?

Thanks again for your response!

Hi Marina I just put up with it really… Hot water bottle when it gets bad used to take tablets (merbevirine maybe) to reduce the spasms but didn’t really make much difference… So just use laxatives instead.

I’ve got also IBS since about 20 years. I tend to be on the loose side but after 1st FEC they only gave me Senna tbl and I was very constipated which was very sore. So after the 2nd they added Lactulose, I only take half the dose the ysay but it helps. Last time I had quite a bit of tummy cramps and a bit diarrhoea for a couple of days, after the 3rd FEC on wed I haven’t had the cramps and tolet going is OK. Bit more windy too though.

Hope this helps,

Christine xx
