Chemotherapy delayed

Hi
I was due to have my 5th chemotherapy treatment on 28th December but due to side effects I suffered they wanted me to take a further 2 week break.
I have now had my new date which basically means I will have had a three week break.
I am worried that this lengthy break will enable any cancer to start to grow again and if so what’s the point in carrying it on.
Has this happened to anyone else ?

Thank you

I know its really difficult to get your head around but your oncologist wouldnt let you have a 3 week break if it was detrimental to your treatment.
Try to “enjoy” your 3 weeks off by having a rest, building up your strength & having a bit of normality before getting back on schedule.
Wishing you luck x

Thank you for your reassurance it really helped. Happy new year x

Hey!
I felt the same as your self when my chemo was delayed (due to blood levels/ a developing rash) I thought delaying chemo would cause more problems, however from speaking to a lot of people in the same boat I now know it’s fairly normal for various reasons, I’ve been having chemo myself a few times when others have been sent home. Try to relax and enjoy the break from it as much as you can (I know that’s not easy!) take care xx

Thank you I feel better about things now x

Hi binnie1,

Thank you for your post.

It is understandable that you would feel worried about the extended break in between your chemotherapy cycles, how long is needed varies for each individual. As @Luskentyre1 and @rach8 say it is not uncommon to need a longer break so that you are feeling well in yourself and your treatment team feel that it is safe to proceed with the next cycle. Between each cycle of chemotherapy, you’ll have an assessment to see how you’re feeling and whether you’ve had any side effects so they can be managed.

It may be helpful to speak to your breast care nurse or treatment team about how you are feeling. They will be able to talk through with you your individual situation which may help you to understand any risks and benefits of breaks between each cycle of chemotherapy.

Talking to someone who has had a similar experience can often be helpful. Our Someone Like Me service can match you with a trained volunteer who’s had a similar experience to you. You can be in touch with your volunteer by phone or email and they can share their personal experiences to answer your questions, offer support or simply listen to how you are feeling.

You can ring the Someone Like Me team on 0800 138 6551 or email them at someone.likeme@breastcancernow.org, so they can then match you to your volunteer.

We also offer a range of free supportive services for anyone who has had a diagnosis of breast cancer which you may be interested in. They include face to face and online courses and events.

Do call our helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions. The helpline team have time to listen, talk things through and signpost you to additional support and information if necessary. Your call will be confidential, and the number is free from UK landlines and all mobile networks. The number is 0808 800 6000, (Relay UK -prefix 18001).

If you would prefer one of our nurses to call you. Please complete this form ticking the box agreeing to a call back.

Out of hours you can leave a message and we will call you back when we next open.

Best wishes
