Choosing a Bra Size After 2nd Mastectomy

Hi ladies,

I’ve not been about for quite a while but I’m looking for some advice. I had breast cancer in 2009 and had a left mx. I went through chemo and Herceptin which finished in April this year. I was looking into reconstruction and when I saw the specialist nurse in July this year she realised that they had somehow missed the Breast MRI that I should’ve had in October 2010!!! They got me an MRI really quickly and I was given nightmare news. They had found a substantial abnormal area in my remaining Brest. Further tests showed it was high grade DCIS. I had a right mx at the earliest opportunity and SNB. My nodes were clear and even though the DCIS was 5 inches in size there were no invasive cells so thankfully no need for more treatment.

Now to the reason for my post. I now have no breasts and have not yet bothered with wearing a bra with my softies. I did try once but the bras I have are undersides and hurt my new scar. For the most part I am happy to not wear a bra but I’m sure there will be times when I want to wear one so I have been looking into non wired post mx bras but have no idea what size to go for. How do you decide?

My breasts were quite large so my first prosthesis was large too and very heavy. It looks enormous when I see it now  I know that wearing two that size would most likely be a nightmare weight wise so want to go smaller. I’m not a small girl so am conscious of getting prostheses that are too small and will look silly. I’m guessing I will need a bra the size I want when I go for a fitting but don’t know how to go about choosing the best/most suitable size. I would love to hear any advice anyone might want to offer.

Hopefully this makes sense. Xx

I think if you go to a reputable specialist bra and prosthesis fitting place, and make an appointment to let them know you might need a bit of time to work things out, then they should be able to let you try all the bras and prosthesis that you need in your own time without you having to guess ahead. Anyway size and shape really depend from make and model.

I went to a specialist place and explained that I wanted the bras and would be getting the prosthesis from the hospital and they were very understanding and let me try it all on to work out what was best. I think Breast Cancer Care can give you a list of places local to you or else get stuff online and send it back.

Thank goodness your nodes were clear this time round, it must have been an awful shock.
