i am very worried, l have been attending my gp for menopause symptoms and being low, my bloods were all fine on monday and she has increased my evorel patches from 25 to 50 all was fine before but on Wednesday l noticed staining in my bra and felt stabbing pain in my right nipple, my right nipple area feels inflammed and throbbing and l have pinkish discharge, my gp is closed until tuesday butr really scared, feel l am never away from the dr is it a coincidence that the hrt was upped and this has happened or could it be something serious, just wanted reassurance really, feel my breast area around the nipple on the right is on fire, only one breast affected

I’m not sure what area you live in but there is a new service that is being introduced called 111 - you can call and be given medical advice and either seen by a doctor/nurse as required.
It’s running aside the 999 service for non- emergency advice/treatment.

|I called the nhs 24 here in scotland and the nurse advised me to wait until I can get appt Tues or Wed, unless l had a temperature, hving had a good look it appears the discharge is from one little duct in the nipple and a coincidence since they just upped the hrt two days before it started, my nipple area throbs and l am pretty scared

I met with my gp last night a week after the nipple discharge started, she has lowered my hrt to 25mg to see if the upped dosage on the monday bnefore the discharge started is part of this. I was thoroughly examined, no lumps but she wants me to go t6o the breast clinic, she sent the request away whilst my hubby and l were there last night, the discharge pink/brown yellowy sticky is still there today, l am petrified has anyone else had this and was it in relation to hrt. cannot sleep no matter how they tell you to put it to the back of your mind.

There are a couple of conditions associated with menopause that can cause a discharge, but are *not cancer*. They wouldn’t necessarily be associated with your patches. Your GP is right to refer you to the clinic, because even if it is a mainly harmless condition, it might still need treatment.
I won’t say ‘don’t worry’ because of course you will, but try to find something else to occupy your mind as much as possible. You were absolutely right to go to your GP.
I had a change to one nipple and what appeared to be bleeding from a sore spot or crack last summer, but a mammogram showed no further signs of cancer, and it may have been a condition which usually develops around menopause called ‘mammary duct ectasia’. It hasn’t given me any more trouble.
Thank you for responding and sharing your experience, l had a call today to say l would be seen on 23rd or 25th april and would get the time and actual day on Wednesday next week, think that is very quick and the time frame has made me even more worried.

You are right to get it checked. I had a sticky discharge from right nipple. Found out is was normal. Hope this helps.

There is an NHS directive which says that any referral for breast exam has to be seen within 2 weeks so your appoinment is not quick. It is normal!

I received a call fromt he breast unit yesterday to advise me that my appt would be allocated on Tuesday apparently Tuesday;s are allocation dates, she said it was likely to be 23rd or 25th to clear my diary… l was impressed but the speed has me scared even more, typical last year l started hrt day before 50th, this year l dont know what to expect 2/3 days before 51st birthday, praying it will be good news, we are due to fl on hol on 10th may but waiting in case we cannot go, we need to be positive but so so hard, nipple now tender and itchy and discharge pink/brown runny and maybe sticky dries to a hard substance on tissue
so so hard trying to keep mind occupied and l keep crying - feel such an idiot

Re your holiday, I wouldn’t cancel it if I were you. I had my diagnosis in October 2010 but as I had a trip to Australia booked and paid for in the November 1010 my surgeon advised me to go ahead and take it. I was put on tablets and had a great holiday. Came back raring to go. Breezed through the surgery and was so pleased that I had not cancelled. You have to remember that many many people have all sorts of symptoms, worry about cancer only to find it is not!! Hope the appointment goes well and that you go on to enjoy your holiday. Xx
