confused and scared

hello everyone

i came across this forum and hope to get some advice please…

today i had an urgent appointment with the breast care clinic as ive been having discharge from my right nipple, sometimes blood stained other times milky or just clear…

the consultant who was lovely took a slide test of the discharge and i had a mammogram to

the mammogram didnt show up anything of severe concern however she wants me to go into hosp as an urgent case to remove either 1 or + milk ducts as she cannot confirm if i have either pre cancerous or cancerous cells or just a polop

at first i said forget it i’ll just live with it but after gentle perswassion i agreed

what im confused with is surely i thought pre cancerous or cancerous cells would of shown up on the mammogram

im feeling really down and wished i’d asked her questions there and then but went into a complete daze when she said…operation…

she also said i’ll have to stay in for maybe a couple/few days…why

i really feel like cancelling the op and see what happens,so scared

any help or reassurance would be very greatful

Breast Cancer Care

Hi Mich
You know you really shouldn’t cancel the op if it is bc it’s not going to go away and will only get worse and if it isn’t it will put the worry out of you mind straight away. As far as cancer showing on a mammogram it depends on how old you are. For many women under 35 their breasts are too dense for anything to be seen on it. It’s a horrible time waiting for results as everyone on here will tell you but you will get through it. When you are next at the hospital make sure you have a list of questions you want to ask because things tend to go out of your mind when you are there. Good luck with the op and keep in touch.
Take care of yourself.

Hello Mich,

Beverley is completely right… you must go in for your op. I am in the same situation as you at the mo with all the same dischage and i too am waiting for my day to go in. I was like you and didnt ask any questions and am now kicking myself on why i was so silly not to. Once she said the C word i shut off and didnt listen any more. I should get my date to go in some time this week as she needed to clear it with the top surgeon on a day. Said i wouldnt be on any waiting list and will be taken in as soon as they can get me in.
The doc told me that alot of the time they cant see the cells on a mammogram and the bloody discharge is a sign that all isnt right.

Let me know when you have your date to go in.
Take care and good luck

hi…

thank you for your replies…

beverly im 38, im aware that discharge isnt right but feel without any concrete evidence am i not best to see what happens…maybe im being a coward, ive only just got over having malignant skin cancer and having it cut out of my neck …

my mind was a blur wen she said she wanted to do the op so i’ll do as you suggested and write some questions down and maybe phone up and see if she’ll chat to me

i do appreciate your time and support

Hi Mich

Did they say how long you would have to wait for your op. Iv been waiting 2 weeks now and still no date. Phoned the bc nurse today ( hospital gave me the number) and she said you can wait up to 6 weeks to go in. Then she had a chat with surgeons sec and she said that people are waiting up to 4 months. A little upset as the doc i saw two weeks ago said i would not have to wait and didnt want me to wait and see what happens and go back in 6 months as it could spread very quickly… not much diference between 4 & 6 months really. The sec said she is going to look into it and see what she can do.

bye for now

Hi Mich

Please make sure you go ahead…i was jumping up and down trying to be heard with discharge for 18 months…clear mammo and ultrasound eventually on my third opinion i had a sub areolar duct removal…unfortunately for me i had DCIS…but luckily for me despite being high grade it had all remained in situ…i am now the proud owner of a new boob made from my tummy…looks far better than my other one!!!
So just to reassure you that even not great news can have a positive result!!! However i really hope your biopsy shows nothing sinister…the duct removal was a breeze…the incision is round the edge of the areolar thus no scarring and day surgery…i had loss of sensation of my nipple post op and loss of it going erect…however the most important thing is they find out whats going on…i just wish they had acted quicker with me!!!
Lots of love and luck Px
