Confused Hubby

My wife spotted a painful lump in her left breast, was reffered to the breast clinic, post examination by the consultant she was asked to do a Mammo, Ultrasound, and then biopsy on this 2.3cm lump, this is as a result clacification spotted in the mamo, we went back last nigh, the biopsy results had come back as negative, however, the consultant said he is not happy, as the mamo and Ultrasound point to a suspect case, so we had another biopsy down last night, what he was saying is that the lump could have been hard and the needle may have not penetrated the lump the first time round, not sure how this could be possible as they had taken five samples? They also scanned the arm pit last night and it was all clear.

So we are are currently on tender hooks, not sure if it is cancer or not.

Anyone have the same experience of my Mrs?

Hi Attaria

I was diagnosed with BC in 2006 when I was 41. My GP said I had a cyst when I showed him the hard lump that I had found. I was sent for mammo, ultrasound, FNA and core biopsies (unfortunately these were all taken on different weeks… rather than at the one stop clinic system, so it took a while to get any where). The mammo & scan pointed to a malignant tumor and my FNA was not usuable (it produced a mere spot of a black tar like substance), so I had numerous core biopsies taken of the lump. I also had lots of blood taken the same day for vaious tests. The results of my core biopsies were inconclusive showing that they only took breast tissue, so I had to go for an ultrasound guided core biopsy where 4 more cores were taken from the tumor. Eventually the results came back that I had a very aggressive grade 3, stage 2 tumor - 3.5cms x 3.8cms.

I have to say that from the day I saw my GP to actually getting that diagnosis was just over 4 months. I didn’t have any pain relating the my lump either.

So yes it does happen and at this stage all you can do is ride the wave and see what the results show.

Hope that helps?

does your wife have any other symtoms, i had no pain with mine

I found a lump in January and was referred to a breast care clinic. I had FNA which produced no fluid so cyst was ruled out - I then had mammo and ultrasound which indicated early stage breast cancer. I had cells taken for analysis but the lab tests came back as clear. The 2nd biopsy was in my case a formality to confirm the diagnosis as my consultant was sure from looking at the US report that I had cancer and had already scheduled my surgery for the following week. He said that even if the lump was no malignant he would be happier if it was out than in and I have to say that I agreed.

When my lump was removed and tested they confirmed grade 1 cancer. I had no lymph nodes affected but I did have an inter-mammory node which contained cancer cells - this was immediately adjacent to where the tumor was.

I know that this makes it sound like a done deal but there is still every chance that your wife’s lump is not cancerous. I’ve read of many women who’ve had inconclusive biopsies and have then gone on to get the all clear. I hope that your wife is one of the 9 out of 10 who’s lump proves not to be cancer.

Good luck and let us know how she gets on.

Hi attaria

I’d just be grateful they are doing such a thorough job - I wish theyhad been more thorough on me when my lump was smaller …

Waiting is an extremely difficult stage and I do feel for you - all you want is all the answers now - and be warned - we never get all the answers … you just have to learn to cope with the info you’ve got …

good luck love FB xx

Atarria …just want to wish your wife good luck as we all know on here that the waiting is the worst …and nothing is ever straight forward …so fingers xssed for you x

Thank you for the supportive comments. My wife being 37 and having a 2.5 daughter makes things much harder, as you can imagine we are going through a roller coaster ride of feelings.

Joanne42 my wife just had the pain in a single spot of the breast and no other symptoms, I am not sure that the hormone treatment she has had in a recent IVF treatment which unfortunately ended in a 6 weeks loss of pregnancy has had any impact in the lump growth, as I have read certain beast cancers are hormone receptive !

My cancer is hormone receptive I had no pain whatsoever and as it was close to my chest wal and peppered in tiny spots all opver the breast it was undetectable on a mammo but was confirmed by a few biopsies and an ultrasound …They will not do or say anything unless they are certain well as certain as they can be …at least your wife has a very supportive well informed hubby by her side … I do hope that you get a happy ending xxx Maz

Attaria,

So sorry to hear you and your wife are going through this roller coaster of emotions.

I too went to my GP with just a discomfort on a single spot on my breast, he sent me to the breast clinic and something was spotted on mammogramme and biopsied. I was told that it probably benign but after waiting a week the results said it wasn’t. I was completely poleaxed but now pleased that they have cought it so early. No lump, nothing to feel, just a blob on the mammo. Very small tumour removed and no node involvement.

I only went to my GP because I wanted to increase my HRT and thought I had better get it checked out. I can’t answer in your wife’s case but the Dr’s say that I wasn’t on HRT long enough to make a difference.

I know the waiting time is dreadful and nothing really makes it easier. The Dr’s seemed to have covered everything so I hope that the results will come back in your wifes favour.

Good luck,

Jo

could be that the hormones and subsiquent loss may just have triggered it i used to have large lumps come up at certain times of the month painful and large told these were just fibriods after mamo and scan at the time so when another popped up years later i wasnt worried so put off going to docs unfortunatley it was cancer this time at least you will be in good hands.

Hi Attaria,
My doctor told me that the usual clinical practice when they have one set of test results that look suspicious (eg. mammogram) and another set that looks okay (eg. biopsy) is to always take the more cautious/suspicious approach and do more tests, as it’s better to be safe than sorry. I was called back for a core biopsy two weeks ago because my mammogram looked very suspicious and had two cores taken (they weren’t too happy with my ultrasound either). The core biopsy results came back all clear last week, and the doctors think I just have a benign lump called a fibroadenoma, but they took another three cores to make sure. The waiting is horrible, but at least you know that they are not taking any chances at all with your health. Hope you get good news, and try to keep in mind that they are just following best practice by doing the tests again.

Well saw the doctor this morning its BC, possibly grade 2/3. He believes that the lump needs to come out with some clearance, not the breast removed. He recommended Blood Tests, CT Scan and Bone Scan which we did today and awaiting the results for the CT and Bone this evening. The MRI will follow and subject to this confirming no spread. He will remove lump and Chemo will start post opp. The type is unclear he is awaiting the result on the type. :frowning:

I am sorry to hear your worrying news and am shedding a few tears here for you and your wife and little one. Thank heavens the docs did more tests. I am delighted that they are being so thorough and she is having all the tests so the docs know what they are dealing with. You must both be so shocked and devastated. Please take comfort from the many of us on this site who can support you and can empathise with what you are going through.

Stay close together.

Thank you just come off the phone with the doctor, the CT scan and bone scan are both clear and there is no sign of any spread. I asked him about the staging if it was 2 or 3, he said it may even be stage 0 and he will only be able to tell once he does the op and takes samples and sends them off to the lab, I guess all of this is good news and points to early stages and no spread. Maybe I am being to positive?

Sorry to hear that your wife has been confirmed with BC. It’s good that there is no spread and the scans have come back clear so far.

Good luck to you both - she is lucky to have such a caring partner to support her through this. I hope you have someone to support you too … you have all of us of course.

Hi Attaria

You have quite a day, I can see. Although your wife has Breast Cancer, the fact that she has no spread and could even have a stage 0 which is what they called Ductal (or Lobal) Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS or LCIS). This is a pre-invasive cancer which has a very good outlook. With regards to feeling positive, if it was me, I would take what the doctor said very postively. Although they have to rely on their tests etc to give an accurate and definitive diagnosis, they often will have a reasonably good idea now after all the scans etc. He obviously can’t commit himself until the pathology report after surgery. However, surgeons and oncologists are unlikely to give you false hope. So, yes, she has BC, but it could be an awful lot worse.

Good luck to you both

Cathy
