CYP2D6 Genetic Test - Tamoxifen

Hi I would like to have the CYP2D6 genetic test done?? To see if tamoxifen works well for you or not. I’m seeking this test privately but have no idea who to use and trust. Sadly its not available to everyone on the NHS.

Because I cannot have the test I have been told I can change my drug to an Overy suprssion drug but I’ve just turned 45 and would rather stay on Tamoxifen for the 10 years than take a more aggressive Hormone Therapy if in fact Tamoxifen is working well for me.

Just looking for the best place privately to have this genetic test done.

Hello kat-jack,

Thanks for posting.

You’ll see from this paper in July 2025 that the clinical significance of reduced CYP2D6 activity on the outcome of patients treated with tamoxifen in early breast cancer is unclear. As you say routine testing isn’t available on the NHS most likely for this reason and that there isn’t the evidence to support its use.

We also don’t know how you would access this privately. It sounds as if the most helpful thing to do would be to speak to your treatment team. You can explain your preference to stay on tamoxifen and why. You could also ask if CYP2D6 test would be any use in your individual situation and if so, how it go about having it done.
