DCIS anxiety

Im due to meet my surgeon on monday for my results. I had biopsy and there are 2 areas of calcification 1.2cm and the other is 5mm.
Consultant radiologist has put markers in during the biopsy. What they for?
I spoke with my bc nurse as I’m not sleeping with the worry. I didnt get much reassurance from her about what will happen.
Is there a chance that the calcifications are benign and I wont need surgery or will surgery be done as a precaution?
Hopefully someone can help with an answer. As I havent slept since my ultrasound and sterotopic core biopsy were done last week

Hiya, I’ve just had 80mm High grade DCIS removed. They have put the markers in so that if you do need surgery they can easily locate the area. They are harmless and won’t hurt etc and won’t go off through airport security.

It could be just calcification but they won’t know until the biopsy comes back. The waiting is the worst, but if it is DCIS it’s the earliest stage and very treatable.

Try not to over think and try to distract yourself with good and fun TV etc. Try not to google and please ask me any questions you like. I know it’s really scary at the moment but you will find strength to get through the next few weeks while awaiting results xx

Thank you. Its the unknown thats so frightening. I was on my own when I was told so didnt fully take everything in. 6 days to wait and it seems so far away. I just cant stop crying

I was in my own too. My husband was not there. It’s really stressful waiting. But honestly I know how scary it is, I cried too but even if treatment is needed and I hope it’s not, they are really great at what they do and this is the earliest stage to have it. Doesn’t take the fear away I know.

I’m always here if you want to direct message me. I have a 12 week recovery after my surgery so I’m mostly in the sofa at the moment.

I get my results from the surgery in Thursday and have been creasing them all week, so you’re not alone in the dread factor.

Just keep talking to us and your family and friends xxx

Hi deedee8,

Thanks for posting. This sounds like a worrying time for you and it’s understandable you are feeling anxious waiting for the results of your recent investigations.

As @motherducky has said markers are often put in to locate areas that may need surgery. Some breast calcifications are found to be benign following a biopsy but as @motherducky explains this will be confirmed with the results. DCIS is an early form of breast cancer which is sometimes found in an area of calcification. You can read about DCIS and how this is diagnosed and treated in the link. If a diagnosis is confirmed your treatment team will discuss your treatment options with you.

Not being able to sleep while waiting for results can be exhausting, and as @motherducky suggests distraction may be helpful, but can be difficult. You may find our tips to help sleep useful. Do speak to your GP if you feel you would like something to help with this.
