DCIS today

Hi Claspe, I am 75 and was diagnosed with a 10 cm DCIS plus mets to my spine and liver. This was a year ago. I thought I’d be gone by Christmas! Mine was ER+ and HR-Surgery was never discussed becasue of the mets. However, I had chemo (paclitaxal) which got rid of most of it (although I only had 8 of 12 weekly sessions because of developing peripheral neuropathy) and this was followed up with Letrozole, Ribociclib and monthly Denosumab injections. I’ve experienced various side effects but for me they change regularly and don’t cause me much grief. I’ve had a pretty good year really. At the time the oncologist said they couldn’t cure me but they could hopefully maintain my current health and, fortunately, that is exactly how it has turned out. I very much hope you will have a similar experience.

Hi,@claspe
I had the diagnosis for DCIS high grade in April this year . Size of lump removed was 15 mm .
I had breast conserving surgery in June which went really well and then chose to have Radiotherapy in September . I didn’t need to take any hormone blocking meds .All went well and I’m now starting to feel better . I had radiotherapy dermatitis about a month after the radiotherapy which was really sore . I’ve been using organic camomile cream everyday on the area and its healing well.
I have had bad fatigue from the radiotherapy which I’m not sure if everybody experiences that .
Try not to worry you will be fine , take each stage at a time and be kind to yourself .

Hi again @claspe Just as a afterthought ( i’ve just sent you a reply about my own experience )
Did you get told what grade of DCIS you have ? ( it is classed as low 1 ,intermediate 2 ,and high 3 .
Low grade has the least chance of DCIS ( or Invasive cancer recurring )
High grade means there is a higher chance of recurrence.

Hiya polytunnelgirl38,

Thankyou for telling me about your experience, my dcis is 35mm but not seen my surgeon yet so dont know the grade, i personnally would want a double mastectomy as i dont want the worry of any reoccurance and if possible i would want to stay on HRT im just hoping that this is something they will :crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers:

It’s a good idea to write all your questions down so you remember them next time you see your consultant .
Ask what grade your DCIS is ,as you may not get told .
I found everyone I talked to about staying on HRT suggested that It was not a good idea .
But talk to your consultant about that .

Hi
I had my first mammogram this May, as i turned 50. Recall to breast clinic and biopsies diagnosed DCIS. They wanted a further area looked at so more biopsies, thankfully no action was needed.
Mine was 7mm low-intermediate grade er positive dcis. Surgery was a wle, completed in July, scar around nipple so healed very well and quickly.
Radiotherapy not indicated for me, i have a clot history so until I’m past the menopause i can’t go on any meds.
Reviews will be yearly. Histology showed nearly 30grams removed with one of the dimensions being nearly 5cm, but dcis was 7mm.
Hope this helps. It’s a surreal world to be plunged into. Xx

Reviews said nearly 5cm

Thankyou, ive got a list as long as my arm especially cause i have 3 daughters so wondering about the Braca gene, my menopause was so bad that i really want to stay on HRT and thats one of my reasons for wanting a double mastectomy, ive never really had a positive relationship with my boobs, ive always felt like i could do without them, strange i know but true even right from being 15.

I completely understand …
Do ask about everything and do your own research , before you make any decisions then you should be well armed as to what is the best thing to do I was very miserable about stopping my HRT as It has helped me feel so much better . I’ve got a menopause clinic appt coming up at some point so that I can discuss options if there are any for me …

Just been watching lots of podcasts about HRT and breast cancer and the benefits of HRT definately out weigh the risk of reoccurrence of DCIS

@claspe I think in the end it’s your choice , even if you are advised by your consultant not to take it anymore.
I was told that my DCIS was not caused by me taking HRT by a Breast care nurse which is interesting .
. But when I asked a breast surgeon ( not the one that actually did my surgery ) if I could carry on taking the HRT I was on at the time of diagnosis she said that if / or when breast cancer recurs ,it is always hormone fed . Now there’s a statement . I am not sure if that is the case :grimacing: but worth looking into .

Ummm interesting  i think that since that study they published 25yrs ago which only studied women over 64 they all like to blame HRT on breast cancer, they never seem to assume that it could have been caused simply by your own estrogen or not. I think the benefits of HRT out weigh the risk for me personally

@claspe I think that it’s not just down to whether we take HRT or not . there are many lifestyle choices that raise the chances of breast cancer occurring . It’s a bit of a minefield !

Total mine field!!!

Hi there! I’m in Canada, but the info on this site has been a great help/comfort for me!
I’m sorry for your diagnosis - it’s a real kick in the pants at first and so scary. I was a mess, but now - I’m at peace with all of my decisions. Every BODY is different and so your path will become clearer as you get more information.

Diagnosed on first mammo (I’m nearly 50). Had follow-up ultrasound and MRI - all clear. My DCIS is 2cm, low grade. I had the ONCOTYPE DCIS test done on the tissue (my score was 0 - the lowest the test can produce), so those cells were incredibly indolent. Due to this score, radiation was not recommended (also, left-sided so implicates the heart somewhat). My risk of recurrence over 10 years is 10% - split into - 6% DCIS and 4% invasive. The way I look at it is, I have a 94% chance of not getting DCIS again and a 96% chance of dodging the shitty kind.

I was offered tamoxifen (baby tam) but after only 10 days could not tolerate it, even at the lowest dose. So - here I am. Just doing my best to treat my body and mind well. For me, it felt like a wake-up call in many ways. I was always a pretty healthy person, but now I’ve ramped up everything and hoping lifestyle changes can account for the minimal recurrence reduction that tamoxifen would have given me.

You will be okay! It’s just really jarring in the beginning. Big hugs from across the pond! xo

Hi I was diagnosed with high grade DCIS june 2022 in left breast I had it removed in July followed by radiotherapy that sept all went well, unfortunately it came back same breast dec 24…I spoke to a different consultant at a different hospital and in March this year I went for a breast reconstruction a DIEP flap surgery which st the minute it has gone extremely well :crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers:…my advise try to keep your head up I know it’s hard and I am sure you will get there,of course speak to all your consultants and get all the help and support you need and look at all the options that they offer you …good luck

Thankyou cassidy13

Also thankyou for sharing your experience and you see you are my case in point, my dcis in right breast is intermediate 35mm but the fact that yours came back is why i just want a mastectomy from day one and even though the dcis in left breast is begnin i am not willing to risk it turning cancerous in 12mths 2years 10years time, i rather have them off and just be flat and hopefully thats the end of it :crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers:

Do you mind me asking what size was your DCIS??

I am sorry I can’t remember what size it was but I do remember they said high grade …I didn’t have any symptoms this was picked up on my routine mammogram which is scary !!..good luck whatever you decide …I know when I first mentioned the removal of my breast my consultant said I was being very over dramatic and sure didn’t it come back 2years ltr !!..so like I say weight up all your options and do what is best for you :crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers:
