Deciding between nipple conserving mastectomy or aesthetic flat closure

Hi all, following a lumpectomy (T1b Her2+ Hr-) and then a re-excision to try to clear the margins, turns out I need a mastectomy (left boob) to clear up the DCIS that they hadn’t realised was there from scans. I’m very sporty (watersports athlete), and struggling to know what is best to do. I’ve been offered a nipple conserving mastectomy (follow up discussions on 15th Jan). I’m also considering an aesthetic flat closure though, for quicker healing, less faff going forward and inspiration from the ‘Unobra’ models who wear their asymmetry with pride! Keen to hear from anyone else who has worked their way through the decision making process and has experience of either options. I’m only a A cup, so my boobs don’t define me, but my sport does.

Hi @dennisslamonrocks, I had elective flat closure left side in Sept 2023. I am a b cup. It was a quick and easy recovery and doesn’t impact my exercising in any negative way. I wear an nhs prosthesis in a well fitting full cup bra from Nicola Jane. I gave no thought to losing my nipple which had a wart like growth on it ( keratosis) so was no loss! and I still had the right side for sexual stimulation. I wish you well with your surgery and recovery. Love Tulip x
