Hi all
I’m having a bad hair day with shed loads falling out as I type and to add to the joys of the morning have just had half a tooth fall out. I did have dental work done before chemo started (as others have suggested) but clearly this bit of work hasn’t lasted long. I’m feeling put upon and tearful…
I’ve booked an appointment with the dentist tomorrow just to get her opinion and see if she thinks i can wait until the end of chemo for treatment. I have my second chemo on friday and so can check what chemo nurses say then. But I wondered whether any one else has had dental problems during chemo and if so what you did about it…all advice welcome.

Hi,
I haven’t actually experienced this but my Mum started her chemo yesterday and prior to this we had been told she couldn’t have dental work during chemo because it would be a risk if they damaged any part of your mouth or you got an infection. I think if something is urgent you must over emphasise to the dentist that you are having chemotherapy so they are gentle and ensure they use clean utensils.
I hope it all goes well for you.

Hi Jo,
Sorry that you feel put upon. It’s just one thing too many isn’t it?
I had the same as you and the dentist was happy to leave treatment until I had finished chemo. So I forgot about it. Hope the tooth doesn’t cause you any problems.

Thanks Margaret and Michelle, hopefully it won’t start hurting and it won’t be a problem to leave it. I’ve just eaten a packet of my daughter’s chocolate animal biscuits and I’m feeling a better. Yes, yes, I know, hardly the thing to do with a bad tooth but desperate times need radical solutions!

I’m glad you are feeling happier Jo. That’s the most important thing.

Hi Jo
I am missing two rather large fillngs and and hoping it will be ok till chemo ends. You do get used to it! Right nuisance all this, isn’t it?
Love and hang in there. Best excuse for avoiding the dentist I have had in years!

Hi Jo
Sorry to hear about your tooth, I had part on my back molar come away last Saturday and was unsure what to do, had Chemo Monday and Onc advised that I could go to the dentist but to tell them I am having chemo. She said they could put a temporary filling in so no drilling and if necessary give some antibiotics to cover incase of infection. But thing full dentistry should be left to after. Mine is not revealing a nerve so not painful so I am trying to leave mine as long as poss. Using mouthwash given after chemo. OH said temp. fillings don’t last long so will just have if necessary. Hope this helps.
My friend called Monday night and on Saturday night she said part of her tooth came out and it is the same tooth as mine, how wierd is that. She is such a good friend, (29 yrs since kids) who haven’t seen that much over the years as live distance away but recently has been over to help and I’ve been to see her. Seems so strange same thing happened same night but gave us a giggle.
Anyway good luck and take care,
Love

Hi
yes, that’s a good suggestion about the temporary filling - i’ll check whether that’s a possibility with this tooth.
Dilys, I’ve just read your post on the taxotere thread and I know you are not feeling in the best of health - just wanted to say that I hope it gets better very very soon and thanks for all the humour and goodwill you give in these posts.

Dear Jo
Thank you so much. Am feeling a bit better today, but so appreciate you caring. Actually I just gave myself a huge lift. Rang the LookGood Feel Better people at the Royal Free, to be told no places till November. But the lovely lady took pity on me and has fitted me in for the Tuesday before my next chemo! I am sooooo chuffed and really looking forward to it. Check out lookgoodfeelbetter.co.uk Have stopped panicking about my eyebrows and lashes now.
Lots of love

Hi Dilys,
I’m fine thanks. Alternating between this site and doing some work! You sound so excited which is great. Eyebrow makeup - hmm! You will have to give us a full report!

Hi Margaret
Get back to work! (XX) Suppose we never thought we would need eyebrow makeup. Mine were always nice and thick and just sat there behaving themselves. As did my mascara free lashes! I’ll let you know how it goes - is the week after next.

Hi Dilys,
Lost hair everywhere except my legs! Sods law! Eyelashes and eyebrows came back after hair on head. All much lighter in colour than before! Having a hair trim on Friday - the first! Still, the positive is look at all that money saved on haircuts, shampoo, etc! Got to be some payback.
Hope you enjoy your trip to the cinema.

Hi Jo,
my bridge came out after my second Epi session, that’ll teach me for eating toffees!!! Anyway, I had been advised not to have any dental treatment during chemo but knew I couldn’t just leave it. Luckily it came out in its entirity. I took it to my dentist who said that she couldn’t do anything invasive bit was confident she would be able to stick it back in. So, after cleaning it up a bit she stuck it back in with no probs at all. Nothing invsaive and no needles or antibiotics needed!
I was sure to tell the staff at the chemo day centre when I went and they were totally happy with the work that had been carried out,
Take care and I hope you get it sorted,
Kelly

Thanks for that Kelly - all this gives me a good idea of what might be done now.
