Depression

My sister has just had a masectomy and reconstruction She is about to start chemo next week. She is very down and asks ‘whats the point?’ of it all. I can only help so far, the usual glasses of wine are not helping, and advised she see her GP for some antidepressants. The GP said it was normal to feel sad, and as she sat there crying suggested she make an appointment at the ‘Maggie Centre.’ I have searched the forum, and none of you mention antidepressants. How are you coping without? Or should she change her GP?

Hi Ilovemysister

Lots of us have been on antidepressants including myself - mine were to help me during the initial few weeks of being diagnosed and going through treatment. A lot of people feel how your sister does and it’s really nice that you are trying to do something to help her. I take them at night to help me sleep in a small dose and still do 2 1/2 years down the line. What part of the country do you live in? There are lots of centres scattered around which provide support and I say the more support the better. You and your sister will find lots of support here too.

Best wishes
Ruby xx

Hi
Thanks for replying. We are both in Glasgow.
My sister has an appointment at the Maggie centre to see a psychologist early next week, and then a review at GP later on in the week. Hopefully they will see sense! xx
