Anyone know why i would receive an appointment for a dexa scan before getting my results from 2nd surgery. Dcis high grade.
I am aware radiotherapy a strong possibility could it be before all that.
Thanks
I knew I would be having a dexa scan (taking Anastrozole) after two lumpectomies to provide a base line for future scans. Had the scan (28 August ) about a week after my 5 days of radiotherapy but was told the results would take about 6 weeks - so still waiting.
Its done if on AI’s or tamoxifen as both can affect bones. Got mine cancelled as stopped taking the tamoxifen so never had one.
Im not on either amd only have results appointment next week.
Could be to get a baseline assessment before taking them. I’m guessing not via nhs as it takes a long time usually before getting one.
Yep via nhs . Had 2nd surgery 4 weeks ago and got results appointment monday . Ill ask then.
It is to provide a baseline to check if you are likely to need bisphosphonates or calcium supplements when you start tamoxophen or similar drugs
Thanks i havent even been offered or agreed or not agreeed to it yet .
Mystery solved . The dexa scan was booked for me to have before commencing amy hormone treatment or radiotherapy. After doscussing with consultant the hormone treatment would only have a tiny befefit but im to come off hrt . The dexa acan still getting done anyway as ive never had one and am doing radiotherapy.
Had baseline DEXA last month as starting Anastrazole too. Had results and gutted as it confirms osteoporosis. Feel cross with myself as could have potentially been avoided where as with the cancer, it was beyond my control. I am 59, fairly healthy and not unfit. Was taking oestrogen for years keeping bone health in mind. Commenced biphosphonate today and already confused whether aching and back pain are side effect from radiotherapy or Anastrazole never mind adding another drug into the mix. Happy days
Has anyone else had a similar experience?
@hydranger1 sorry to hear that. Was you on hrt . Im not starting ai,s but have to come off hrt and will be having radiotherapy soon too.
Yes, I too have just found my dexa results on one of the nhs apps I use and it gives a diagnosis of osteoporosis - the figures show it is worse than I thought it would be. ( 74 with a family history but fairly fit as I knew I was at risk) I think I need a blood test and then be seen by rheumatology. I expect it will mean medication .
