Well we are almost there! I go in on Friday afternoon, hopefully as a day case only. Everyone is kidding me on that the worst part for me will be the fasting before it! I am ALWAYS hungry! I’m a teacher and started work again today after the Summer holiday, so my mind will certainly be kept off it (more or less) until Thursday night. I really hope that removing the lump will give me more answers as to what the lump is and why I developed it in the first place. Fingers crossed!
Thank you so much Sally & Judith!
I’ll be in touch as soon as I can and let you know how I got on. This time tomorrow it’ll be all over thank goodness!
I’m home and OK. Everything went well I think. I’m swollen and tender to touch but not constantly achey which is good. I go back on Friday to have the wound checked and get the biopsy results. I’m so glad it’s done!
I had my follow up at the hospital today. The surgeon explained that I have a sort of chronic infammitory problem in the breast which is just one of these things which happens without reason. He said that this is something which may well happen again, or reverse and get better. He gave it a clinical name which annoyingly I can’t remember! The main thing is, it’s all benign! He said it would be unlikely that any future lumps would be removed as I would be in and out of hospital and would end up with ‘messy’ breasts. The only thing I can really do if I get discomfort is to take painkillers. I have another check up in 6 weeks as he’d like to examine me when the tissue has really settled down.
My wound looks neat, but now the dressings are off, I can see there is a lot more healing to be done and I’m taking next week off work just to be sure I don’t jump the gun and open it again or get an infection in it. All in all, a positive
outcome I think!
Just a quick update to let you all know that 3 weeks on, everything is great. I’ve healed up so well, I’ve shown friends and they have actually struggled to find the inch and a half scar! The tissue appears to be settling and softening now too. I went back to work on Monday and the support and concern there, as it is on here, was really touching. Although I am tired and a little achey now it’s the weekend, I can honestly say it was great to get back to work! Long may this continue. My next check up is on 5th October, so I’ll update again after it.
Thanks for your continued kind words and thoughts through this wonderful forum,
Really glad to hear that all is going well - and that everything is healing nicely. I am sure it will feel good starting to get back to normal at school and I am sure the kids will keep you very busy.
Hi!
Thanks Judith! I’m pleased to report that everything went well! The surgeon said that everything is as it should be in terms of healing, and I must say myself, it looks great. He told me what changes to expect over the next 6, 12 and 24 months so that I can keep my eye on things. I asked him the name he had given the condition last time I saw him as I forgot before. He said the pathology report showed chronic inflamation in the form of duct ectasia and periductal mastitis. I’ve read about these conditions since and everything fits with that, especially periductal mastitis. So, it’s all good really and I just have to manage the discomfort, which is much easier when you aren’t worrying about what on earth is causing it!
Thanks you so much for your concern and support once again, Sally & Judith!

Hi I’m new on here and have recently discovered a lump in my left breast, have a hospital appointment on October 23rd.I am diabetic,Type 1.5 on Insulin.I have heard about this condition which could be related to diabetes and am wondering if it could be what I have.
I have not been on site for a few weeks - so have just seen your posting. How did you get on at the hospital? I hope all went ok - it is a really worrying time when you are not sure what you have got going on in your body. Hopefully the clinic will have been able to provide some answers for you.
I too am Type 1 diabetic and you will be able to read from my earlier postings what my experiences have been.
Lets know where things are up to and how you got on, and I will keep a watch on site in case you want to chat.
I have been interested reading all your posts above - I have had type 1 diabetes for 31 yrs with no complications, no eye changes etc, and found a lump in November - In december got an USS and truecut biopsy done - USS showed normal tissue (!) and biopsy showed inflammatory changes - was told this was normal in diabetics. Presumably then i have mastopathy - which worries me a bit as the diabetic association web site suggests that this is a complication of diabetes, due to poor glycaemic control and is therefore linked to other complications - wereas I had understood it to be more like a frozen shoulder, which can happen to diabetics at any age. Also, I would have thought that if it was due to diabetic control then type 2’s would get it as well.
Anybody got a clue?
Another question, the biopsy was done on the 20/12/07 but i still have a dark red 1/2cm scar from this, that looks much worse than a scar from an op done on the 5/02/08. Is this normal?
Hi everyone
I’ve been doing some googling because for 2 weeks now I’ve had a largish, and sometimes painful (when its touched) lumpy boob. I visited my GP who sent me off for a mammogram and I also had an ultrasound. The diagnosis came back as “hormonal”, which I was quite relieved about, but the lumpyness is still there, so I am considering returning to my doctor to ask for further investigations.
My point of writing is that I’ve come across this thread. I am a diabetic, on insulin and have been for almost 40 years since I was 11. I never knew this condition existed and now because of my recent problems am wondering if this is what I have. Is there a way of actually checking or does it involve further breast cancer checks before confirmation of diagnosis.
My control has never been ideal, perhaps on the higher side than it should be although it tends to be “brittle”. I don’t have other diabetic complications, except that there have been some “normal” changes with my eyes.
