Diagnosed with IDC on Tuesday

Hi, I’ve been reading bits and peices for the past few weeks while waiting for Biopsy results. I was diagnosed on Tuesday with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma and axilla node involved.

I am due to have surgery in November and wondered if anyone can give me a sense of how long recovery takes and any tips?

Thanks in advance

Hi @finn1 ,

Sorry to hear of your recent diagnosis, hope you’re doing ok. Do you know what type of surgery you are having?

I’ve just had surgery on Monday this week, which involved a lumpectomy including LICAP (flap surgery where fat is moved from one area to reconstruct the breast) and Sentinel node removal.

Technically, it’s day surgery but my op went for a while and I’m single so I had to stay in overnight as there was nobody at home to look after me.

You should be provided with info by your breast care team & surgeon. But the guidance is you can’t drive until such point you can do an emergency stop, at least a 2-3 weeks. You also shouldn’t lift anything heavier than a kettle for 4-6 weeks.

That aside, I was pleasantly surprised that I haven’t been in pain, only discomfort which is more in the armpit area rather than breast. Wear a good post surgery bra, that helps with the healing process. I was up and about once I got home from hospital but the tiredness has been overwhelming. You have to ensure you rest and nap. I also have felt emotional the last couple of days. I managed to get out for a walk today which felt great.

Practical tips, as mentioned post surgery bra - Asda & Primark do good ones. A heart shaped cushion for under your arm to help ease the discomfort, my hospital gave me one created a local craft group. I also had bought one. Get Front fastening shirts & tops & nightwear. I’ve also just bought a v shaped pillow & orthopedic pillow as I’ve been struggling to sleep on my back. These made such a difference.

There is a separate Surgery thread under “Diagnosed with Breast Cancer”, you might find that helpful.

Hope all goes well :heartpulse:

Thanks for the reply, I’m having a lumpectomy and ANC.
The tips about the tiredness and the pillow are good, I hadn’t thought of front fastening clothing, so thank you for that too.
I drive a lot to get to work and about with my job, so I’ve been trying to gaiuge how much time off work I’m going to need; some work can be done from home so I have that leeway and a supportive manager, so that all helps.

Hope your recovery continues to go well.
