diagnosed yesterday

Hi

I was diagnosed yesterday and am still in shock.

I found a lump a couple of months ago and having had cysts before didnt do anything about it. I happened to be at the GP for my annual thyroid check-up and mentioned the lump. I cant believe how quickly things happened!

I went to the clinic on my own yesterday, still convinced it was a cyst and was shocked to come away with a diagnosis and a Breast Clinical Nurse specialist!

I have a 2 cm lump that the mammogram and ultrasound have created the diagnosis. Although the biopsy result wont be back until 19th June the specialist is apparently in no doubt. The ultra sound suggests nothing in lymph nodes but I have now read that surgery could change that. The biopsy results will identify if I need chemotherapy and surgery or surgery and radiotherapy. My pre-surgery check up is booked for 26th June and surgery will be July.

It is all happening so fast!

Does anyone recommend doing anything about diet or supplements? I have been told Turmeric helps, I have read conflicting things about changes to diet. I don’t know what to do with myself!

Hello . . . .and please give yourself time to absorb that shock, you are among folk who know that gut-wrenching feeling so well, and it sends you reeling.

There will be lots of ladies who can help and advise you on here, all with different experiences, different ages, and I think one of the things we learn is that there is so much that goes with the diagnosis, such as type of breast cancer, grade etc - but that will come.  Yes I found things moved very fast, where I went from the shock of diagnosis and leaving the hospital with The Folder, and then phones calls coming through with appointments?  In one way, of course that’s exactly right, and how it should be - but your head sometimes has trouble keeping up with this whole new routine and terminology.  Then there are other times when it goes too slow, like when you wait for results and answers. . . . .times when you need others around to support you, and suggest ways to get through.

I wish you well - it’s the weekend, when helplines and information points seem to go quiet - but you have come to the Forum, which never closes, and if someone doesn’t get back to you right away, you won’t be forgotten.  Once you get used to coming here, you will maybe find the ‘headings’ and ‘threads’ that are most helpful, and then you will gradually network and find what a community there is here.

I dip in and out from time to time, but I am glad that you found this place.

Hi Chaseyourderams,

Glad you found us, although of course, you’d rather not be here.

It’s quite normal to feel as you do, we’ve all been there. Getting diagnosed is such a shock.

It can help to take it a stage & an appointment at a time & try not to get into the ‘what ifs.’

There are a number of investigations to go through to get the correct treatment plan for you & waiting for results is very stressful, as the mind goes into overdrive in filling in the gaps. However, it does all settle down when the treatment plan is confirmed & you know where you’re going with it.

The important thing is, if the diagnosis is confirmed, then you can now get it dealt with.

In respect of diet, maybe just get through this stage first, many of us make some lifestyle changes after diagnosis, but do also be aware that there is also a lot of misinformation online, so be careful. It can help to stick to reputable sites, like this one, Macmillan, Cancer Research UK & NHS Choices.

If bc is confirmed, the this is worth a look: scienceblog.cancerresearchuk.org/2014/03/24/dont-believe-the-hype-10-persistent-cancer-myths-debunked/

You will get through, we all do.

Hi Jan,

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

There are certain foods that are naturally anti-cancer / anti-angiogenic. Turmeric has been studied a lot. Having a healthy balanced diet is often recommended, see here for example:

cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/causes-of-cancer/diet-and-cancer

Feel free to message me if you have any Qs about diet etc as I might miss it if posted on a thread etc.

Results are in. I have grade 3 invasive ductal carsonoma that is ER+

surgery early July, radiotherapy and hormone treatment. I know it could have been a lot worse but I am still petrified! In the 2 week wait for results the lump has definitely grown and I have some pain. Back to consultant on Friday to discuss treatment plan further.

Hi Chase your dreams, sorry you find yourself here.  After diagnosis is a very scary time but once your treatment plan is underway it gets easier.  I joined the “going through treatment” threads on here which really helped.  Here’s my story which you may find some comfort and useful tips from: lifeafterlola.com/

please feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Best wishes.
