I have been to docs today as found a lump doc thinks it is just a thickening but wants me to get a mammogram. I have pain and she said if it was breast cancer I wouldn’t be getting pains is this true? Thanks
Hi Emmared
I think your doc was absolutely right to refer you for a mammogram as only then will you be sure whether you have cancer or not. It is more likely to be not, but if it is, it is very treatable. Pain is not usually associated with breast cancer (I’ve been told…),but in my view anything different about the breasts should be taken to the GP. I had pain in one breast, no lumps or bumps, but on referral was diagnosed with early stage bc in the OTHER one, NOT the one I had discomfort in, so it’s really good to get anything checked out.Hopefully the mammogram, and any further tests they may do, will show that it isn’t. Come on here again when you have the results, whether it is good news or less than good. For more questions you can always post on the Ask the Nurses section. Good luck. X
Thank you I’ve just rang to see when my appointment is and its 10th March x

Hi Emmared
Pain is not always associated, but it can sometimes be associated with breast cancer. Any lump in the breast should be looked at and your GP is absolutely right not to ignore this.
I had lump that was painful and I was referred to my local breast screening service. I saw a wonderful consultant and after an ultrasound, I was told it was just some breast tissue and nothing to worry about. He did however advise me to cut down on coffee and take Evening Primrose Oil. I am pleased to say that after cutting down the coffee, the lump did get a bit better, but when I stopped drinking coffee altogether, the lump went away completely!
A patient of mine had a painful lump and it did turn out to be malignant. So never ignore a lump, always get it checked out. It can be scarey and worrying but the sooner it gets looked at the better.
Hi Emmared,
I hope all went well with your appointment. I’ve just come across this discussion and can share with you that I went to my doctor with pain in my breast and what I though was a thickening of tissue (no lump). I was seen at the breast clinic 2 weeks later and diagnosed with Triple Negative BC 3 days after my Mammogram, biopsy and ultra sound. Any changes in the breast be it lump, dimples, pain, thickening, anything need to be addressed and checked out by a doctor.
I was diagnosed in 2015 and have been clear 16 months now
Hi, I had pain in my breast. It started in July. Couple of visits to surgery to be told that everything was fine and pain was very rarely cancer.
October I found enormous lump, easily visible by naked eye and then I was sent for tests. Grade 2 cancer and 3 weeks later the lump was removed plus 3 lymph nodes. One was infected. Rest of lymph nodes removed month later but luckilly they were ok. But the lump turned out to be grade 3.
However I am now on chemo which I will be for 6 months and then radiotherapy.
So in answer to all the questions here. If your breast hurts it can definitely be cancer even if there is no lump. If there is a lump and it hurts, then it could well be cancer too. So go straight to gp and insist on tests.
Hope this helps
