diep weds salisbury odstock hospital

hi, my daughter (22) is having elective double mastectomy with diep recon on weds in salisbury hospital, i am so worried about her !!

can anyone tell me of there experiences of this surgery and has anyone had their surgey in salisbury hospital ?

thanks from a very worried mum :frowning: xx

Hi dawnie

I can understand how worried you must feel about your daughter and hope I can offer some reassuance.

I had a diep reconstruction in March and the surgeon had previously worked at Odstock. The op itself is long, as I’m sure you know, but I’ve been absolutely fine. I had a couple of days in intensive care (they have to make sure the tummy flaps don’t fail) and then around 6 more days on the ward.

Of all the reconstructions, it’s supposed to give the most natural shaped breasts and I’ve been really pleased with the result. The initial discomfort lasted around 3 weeks and I was never in any great pain. I had a patient-controlled morphine drip for about 24 hours after the op which worked well.

The tummy scar goes hip to hip, but quite low down and hasn’t made me self-conscious at all - although your daughter is so incredibly young and she might feel differently. However, I wore a bikini for the first time in years this summer and no scars were visible.

I think it’s often worse for relatives watching those you love having to go through surgery, pain and discomfort - I do feel for you, but I’ve been fine.

Lots of luck to your daughter for the op - will be thinking of her.

hi,

had my reconstruction done at Salisbury, and cannot fault the hospital, they have some top plastic surgeons there. It is clean and the staff on Laverstock ward and breast care nurses are wonderful. Also they are in no rush to send you home until you are ready, which is not the case in other hospitals,
good luck to your daughter,

thankyou for your replys, jade had her surgery yesterday on lavertock ward and the staff are fantastic.

i saw her today and she has a lot of tummy pain but i guess thats to be expected !!

i know its early days but they are all pleased with her and her tummy and breasts look great. she was advised to get a support bra a size bigger, i know she is swollen but has gone from a 38 cup to a 47 at the moment !!! she did ask about implants before surgery as was concerned she may be a bit small as she has a large frame but the surgeons have said they have made her bigger and wont need them. she does have the hip to hip scar in her bikini line but the only scar on her breasts are round the aereola (think thats how its spelt) i cannot get over what a wonderful job they have done for her !!

now its just fingers crossed that all goes well and no post op problems, thanks once again for your replys, yesterday was a horrendous day but was so pleased when i saw her today

Hi Dawn

So pleased that Jade’s op went well - that’s fantastic.

All the best for her recovery. It’ll be an uncomfortable few weeks, but worth it in the end.

Please pass on best wishes to Jade - she’s in good company!!
