DLA 3yrs on and renewal

Hi all,

I’ve been absent from the forum for quite a while now but feel I need some advice. Nearly 4 years ago I was dx with secondary breast cancer from the start with multiple mets to both lungs at the time I was advised by a lovely lady on here to apply for DLA which I did and was awarded the seemingly usual 3 yrs. I asked my GP to fill in a DS1500 which he did and too be honest with you I really didn’t think I had long left on the planet. So 3 years down the line and I’m still here although I have too say I’ve buried a lot of women that I made friends with on here who also had a similar if not the same dx as myself. My story is different in that whilst I am still on treatments which do affect me very badly ie: herceptin forever and hormonal I am still here and as of the last scan they couldn’t find any sign of my disease on the lungs however there is a grey area on my liver that is stable (we still can’t tell whether its mets or not). So the DLA or PIP as they are now known have sent renewal forms and I really don’t know what to do, I’ve asked advice from friends and other ladies with SBC and everyone seems to think I should reapply and ask my GP to fill in another DS1500 form. I have good day’s and bad days. The bad days are really bad and I can’t get out of bed with terrible side effects that leave me unable to function properly either blinding migraines or unable to walk ie: hobble around. My question is ladies what should I do? this is really stressing me out, I never claimed anything before this happened to me, also not sure my GP would fill in another DS1500 form. Is there anyone else whose been in this position or is going through the same I would really appreciate any advice or help you could offer. thanks in advance xxxxx

Sarahlouise, reapply for it,this disease can change so quickly. And treatments can knock you for six.
So if I were you I’d defiantly apply again.

Sarahlouise, definitely reapply for it like the others say. I’ve only just received PIP for the first time and was very nervous about asking my GP to complete the ds1500. She did it willingly but not before she rung me to tell me I wasn’t going to die within 6 months and she was looking forward to being able to sign my next one too! Like you, I’ve never claimed anything before and it felt so wrong asking for this, but we are entitled to it and living with this disease means we never know what’s round the corner. Your bad days prove you qualify for it.

Thanks girls for your comments I’m defo going to reapply and ask my GP to fill in the form for me like he did the last one. its bad enough dealing with cancer everyday for the rest of your life without having to deal with all this red tape. thanks again girls I really do appreciate it. xx

Sarahlouise, i echo what the other ladies have said, def re-apply, you are entitled to it.
