DLA review

Hi all,

I have put a comment on the chemotherapy forum about DLA but thought it might be useful to put one here too.

I have had my DLA reviewed recently after being awarded the highest rate under the special rules in 2002 for secondary cancer. Apparently DSS are reviewing all special rules cases under a rolling programme starting with those who have been on DLA under then special rules for some time.

I had to fill in a special review form which I did with the help of welfare rights and my GP or Oncologist were also contacted for information. I was subsequently awarded the middle rate of care component DLA not just on the basis of having secondary cancer but mainly due to my physical abilities now. This award will be subject to further reviews but no time limit is given.

I have to say I found that the staff at the DLA section in Blackpool both polite and sympathetic although I’m sure there will be some people who may not have this response.

The welfare rights officer was just brilliant and so knowledgable and I would suggest anyone who is contacted for a review gets in touch with one.

Thanks for this info. I have a feeling I will be up for DLA review in a few months so it is good to know what to expect.

Hi Wendy

Thanks from me as well – I’ve been in reciept of DLA under “special rules” for 4½ years, so I suspect my case will be reviewed soon as well. Will take your advice and get support from a welfare rights expert.

Like Marilyn I’ll probably be up for review soon as well (4 years under special rules).

I think it’s sometimes quite hard to assess us though because back at the beginning of the year my bone mets became active again and had to undergo quite a bit of radiotherapy and found walking difficult but am now okay again. My concern is that none of us know what our situation is going to be like in another 6 months.

I also found the DLA to be very sympathetic Wendy and couldn’t fault them.
