Do periods return after chemo & rads ????

Hi just wondered if periods return after chemo & rads??

I am 42 had chemo , finished in may 08, had the lumpectomy and i am having radiotherapy at the momment. I am not due to have tamoxifen or any other hormone treatment so i just wondered if periods are likely to return or not.

I was told the closer to the menopause you are when having treatment the less likely they are to return. Is there any way of telling if you are on the menopause ?? I have been having some hot flushes, mainly in the evening and mostly just my head and face.

Have two children so not looking to have any more, bless them ,need a rest after all this lot.

Best wishes all

Hi Sarah

I have had 6 lots of chemo and start rads tomorrow. I am 41 and my onc said that after the age of 35 it is highly unlikely that periods will return. I had my last one in June and now experiencing flushes just as you are.

I think it is a waiting game to see if they return and my onc said that the question will be asked at the 6 month check up. If they haven’t returned then bones will be checked density etc…

Hope this helps
Anita

Hi Sarah

Im 41 when i had my firt chemo in Jan2006.After my first session and althrough out the chemotherpay and radiotherapy,i did not have any period and on Oct-Dec2007 I had blood tests including FSH level to determine at what state i was…unfortunately, I am now medically post menopausal. My chances of having my own children has now been naturally interrupted.
Now im 43 and having another primary BC treatments. The way I look at this situation is im still alive and looking forward to living life and will worry about family /kids when this finishes.
I guess, you could ask for some tests as well to determine your status.

I am in the same boat as you as regards to periods.

My period was in January 08. Had my last chemo June 08, start rads next week. I am 38 yrs old, without children. My onc said they might come back 6 months or 6 years time.

We were trying for a baby before i was dx.

Hi Christine,

we were trying as well for kids before i was diagnosed too.some things are meant to be.we even tried IVF privately 6 years ago but unfortunately, i only had biochemistry pregnancy then with twins but its not meant to be…then diagnosed with BC.Life hey…

Hi Sarah,
I am 47 I was dx last July and had 8 chemos, 4EC and 4 taxotere, then ops and I have just finished rads. My periods stopped after first chemo and have not returned, I have to take tamoxifen so have been told they prob wont come back, some peoples seem to and some don’t. I know people who are younger who have had Soladex injections ( I think thats the spelling) before chemo to switch of and try and protect ovarys so they could start periods again afterwards. I think its abit trial and error at the moment.

I think blood tests can check how your hormone levels are

Good luck with rest of your treatment

Ladies, I was diagnosed with breast cancer in Spring 2007 at 44 and was told I would probably never have another period given my age. I had surgery, chemo, (A/C, Taxol and Herceptin) and Radiation. Just finished the Herceptin Oct 28 2008. Had my last period Oct 2007 and was in the middle of full blown menopause up until 2 weeks ago. Then I realized I wasn’t having any hot flashes, and they were pretty regular… then last week, I started spotting, and this week, I feel like a 14 year old with her first period. OMG what a mess. I thought I was done. I am not impressed. The only normal I have found through my adventure is that there is no normal. We are all different. All the best to each of you and good luck with the baby making.

mine started the day of my last radiotherapy - and not having had one for months it was awful - now having second one and it’s normal - love FB xx
