does organic milk contain growth hormones

Hi all,
Due to digestive probs I have not drunk very much milk for years, I have been drinking soya milk. I went to a seminar at Guys hospital in London and it was to launch Vegetarian and vegan society I think, 1 in 9 info and diet for breast cancer. It was very interesting Jane Plant was one of the speakers. The website is vegetarian.org.uk and they have some interesting articles on breast cancer and white Lies which is about milk. I have read alot about this subject and I think its up to the individual to decide whats best for them, i drink oatly milk and also have an occasional soya yogurt and coffee with cream. I agree with Valanne a little bit of what you fancy does you good. This bastard disease is not going to stop me having the occasional, tia maria coffee and cream, my favourite!!!
Take care all

what I find curious is that I am a vegan as part of choices made 39 years ago - but during three years of treatment on Arimadex and Zoladex I have never been asked about my diet. I hear all this stuff about research but really, we are all there aren’t we? Why not just start talking to us???

I so agree with Bluejwana with regard to diet. I told my consultant that I had taken a long, hard look at my diet and was told that diet made no difference!! I do get rather cynical about doctors and drug companies - it’s all money orientated. Mind you, there are many conflicting opinions about diets in these forums so if doctors did consult us they would get very confused, but it would give them some interesting research. I like to think that I’m doing my best to keep healthy and if the cancer does come back at least I’ve tried. If only the docs would get it into their heads that encouraging us with whatever health diet we chose would be psychologically good for us (even if they don’t personally believe it).

I don’t think growth hormones are added to organic milk and I think it is the oestrogen content in dairy that I believe is the problem and the fact that the cow is lactating and producing a lot of milk which increases the oestrogen levels. Please correct me if I am wrong anyone.  Anyway, this is interesting research. Please see link: calmerme.com/cow-goat-milk-estrogen-levels/

Growth hormones are not added to organic or non organic dairy cows, nor beef cattle it was made illegal years ago, (although allowed in the USA), would be interesting to know if a higher proportion of BC out there although with the size of the population weight wise this could be skewed!

To help understand the dairy farming business…

A cow will calve and if in a dairy herd the calf is removed and fed powdered milk until weaned onto silage, hay, grass and the cow goes into the milking herd to be milked. She will be put back into calf and will calve again 12 months later having had 2 months off ‘dry’ ie not producing any milk just out in a field building up ready to calve again.

Farming is a business but the animals have to be treated well to stay fit and healthy, they will be given antibiotics if they are sick as anyone would for themselves or their children or pet if applicable only. This milk is discarded until treatment has finished and the withdrawal period has passed. There are big fines for accidentally putting antibiotic milk for collection as every tanker load is tested before being used and if signs of antibiotic contamination then it is rejected.

A lot of vegetarians and especially vegans will disagree with a lot of this and with a vegan brother I have heard and had the arguements and also a lot of very biased information from Peta, no area of this world is perfect and you will always get the rogue farmer which is then pounced on as the ‘norm’.

At the end of the day it is personal choice and As already mentioned I am not going to worry to much about what I eat as long as it is a healthy diet. Yes I eat dairy and have breast cancer but I also eat a lot of cruciferous home grown organic veg which apparently acts like Tamoxifen but…

I also have cancer on both parents side of the family, BC in maternal gran and cousin both aggressive and fatal, yet my mum has been on HRT for 30years with no BC… seems to have jumped a generation.

I think everyone has to do what they think is best for them as I don’t think there is any right or wrong way of surviving BC in the years ahead as still could be run over by the no10bus or drive on the motorway and be in an accident.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Likewise haven’t eaten hardly any dairy for many years, no meat at all since I was a kid, and still diagnosed with hormone receptive BC. We are women and have a lot of hormones…
