After 2 calcium lumps were found during a mamogram, (1 intermediate, 1 high and cancerous) I had a single left mastectomy in February, had an inflatable implant fitted during surgery, and eventualy given the all clear with no radiotherapy or Chemo necessary. I give my story for reassurance, and to show how many appointments I’ve needed at the breast clinic at the hospital.
Every appointmant letter that I had said to attend alone, it stated that I couldn’t take anyone with me unless it is essential or I require a carer.
I attended my first appointment alone, naturally frightened. I noticed quite a few people in the waiting room had someone with them, but went in alone as my husband had left me at the door, and was waiting in the hospital cafe down a long corridor. The BC nurse told me I could bring someone with me next time, they don’t worry about it. If I’d known, my husband could have been with me, but like you I took what the letter said for granted and attended alone.
I’d take someone in with you, and just see what they say. They can just ask them to leave if need be, but hopefully like at our hospital they’ll be ok with you having someone there to support you.
I hope this very small bit of info will help take the pressure of anyone waiting appointments and worrying about going in alone. xxxxxxxxxxxx
