Double Mastectomy

Hi All,

After a routine mammogram, as I’m nearly 50, I was called back. Then had biopsy’s from both sides, so painful. A week later was told I have 2 sorts of cancer, different ones each side, one being aggressive. I was devastated as it was a total shock, I had no symptoms whatsoever. Had another biopsy, then had a meeting with the surgeon. He has advised me to remove both sides and they will remove my Sentinel nodes. I’m having the surgery 27th February.

I am dreadfully squeamish, so I’m totally dreading the whole thing. Also, I have huge boobs, 36K! Thankfully, I have never liked them, I’m more worried about all the needles, stitches etc.

I go back 2 weeks later for results and treatment plan.

If if anyone has any ideas of how to help me after the op, I’d be so grateful.

Much Love

Hi Pip

sorry you have had to find this sight , I am fairly new and only joined last Thursday after being told I needed a Mastectomy and a breast reduction to gain symmetry, when you are told shock does not even come into it when you do not see it comming so my thoughts are with you.

I can not offer you advice post op but I was informed the pain will not be nearly as bad as when I had keyhole surgery to remove a polyp near my appendix, so I am holding on to this.

although I will get my date next week I am stocking up my cupboards and have donated to charity any thing I will not wear again, but I guess we all do things in a different way.

i hope someone can offer you advice, take care.

Hi Pip, sorry you have had to join this club, but you have come to the right place for help and support. I’m not the right person to answer your questions as I had a lumpectomy and full node clearance, but I’m sure that someone will be along shortly . I just wanted to assure you that you are not alone, and that all of us here understand what you are feeling. You don’t say what grade or stage you are, but if I can tell you I have had surgery, chemo, rads and have secondaries but am going strong two years later, I hope it gives you hope.

I filled in my pre surgery info and stressed my concerns strongly re anaesthetic ( I don’t do well) and my fear of sickness( I really really don’t do well!) My anaesthetist visited me on the ward and had addressed both my concerns, so my op went like a dream. My after care from the community nurses was fab, and I made sure hubby had the kettle on and treated them as friends when they visited. I had a drain in as I had LN clearance , and it was a bit painful, but all manageable. Make sure you follow instructions and take all your pain meds. My nurses were very firm on that point. There are a lot of really helpful booklets on this site which I down loaded and used for hospital visits. My mind was in turmoil, so it was helpful to read up on the different stages ( don’t get too far ahead!!!) so I could discuss procedures and stages of treatment with the different consultants. I would really recommend the pathology pamphlet as I didn’t have a clue what all the initials stood for. From now on you will have a whole team of experts looking after you, who will meet weekly to chart progress and treatments. I hope your team is half as good as mine was/ is.  I wish you all the very best in your journey , which is not easy but very achievable . X? ?
