drugs used after Tamoxifen finishes
drugs used after Tamoxifen finishes has anyone been given the drugs arimidex or letrizole as a follow up from tamoxifen - have you had any bad side effects?
A collegue at work is on letrizole following tamoxifen.
She mentioned that her hair is thinning.

Femara I was on Tamoxifen for 2 years, and then changed to Letrozole/Femara a year ago.
I have been suffering from stiff joints, especially my middle fingers, thumbs and feet and ankles. My fingers get really painful over night, and after a while each morning ease up a lot, but I still find my grip is a lot weaker than before, and holding a pencil is painful. I’m only 45, but feel much older first thing in the morning.
Due to see onc in 2 weeks time and will discuss more with her then.
I changed to Arimidex last November after two years on Tamoxifen. Had a few joint and muscle pains to start with but these have eased over the past couple of weeks. Other than that, I feel much better on Arimidex - no thinning hair yet and fewer hot flushes too!

Letrizole I am on Letrizole. Went straight on this instead of Tamoxifen. Just a bit of stiffness in the mornings - that’s it.

letrozole My mum’s been on letrozole for about 3 weeks since coming off tamoxifen (she’s not very computer literate, hence why I’m posting for her).
She had 2 weeks of severe mood swings, but they’re starting to settle down. Plus a few other symptoms; including swellings (facial and legs), lethargy, etc. But she found the mood swings toughest to deal with, as they were effecting her getting through the day.
She’s on the up now though!

Tamoxifen/Arimidex I took Tamoxifen for 2 yrs and switched to Arimidex because of the hot flushes, have now been on 2.1/2 yrs. I had arm and leg pain but have been perscibed Adcal-D3 (high dose calcium tablets) and have been taking them for nearly 12 mths and the pains have disappeared, except for soreness in my fingers especially first thing in the morning.
exemestane Hi,
I was put straight on to exemestane (aromasin) following surgery, chemo etc. It is another if the AIs.
Only problem has been with diarrhoea which started just after I commenced exemestane. However, I also commenced herceptin at about the same time. Onc seems to think the problem is a side effect of the herceptin rather than the exemestane. Hope so as I am now half way through herceptin treatments. Finish September.
Had colonoscopy last week to exclude Ca. No growths. Have taken biopsies to exclude inflammatory disease.
Otherwise no problems. Hope you are symptom free.
Best wishes Pam
exemestane Hi Pam - thanks for your reply - I am a young at heart 62 year old - that is until I was put on letrisol - terrible pains and numbness in hands and feet - I was on tamoxifen for 5 years - now I am going on to exemestane tomorrow - I now am beginning to feel my age - I had breast cancer - did you?
Hi Veronica,
Yes I have BC. Was diagnosed 11 months ago and have had R. mastectomy followed by chemo. Have been on the exemestane since September and commenced herceptin about the same time.
I was put on exemestane as I also have rheumatoid arthiritis and this particular AI is supposed to have less in the way of joint side effects. Fortunately since the chemo my rheumatoid has been in remission. The chemo drugs are a very effective treatment for rheumatoid if somewhat extreme.
I am 55 years old and feeling very fit at the moment 'cos my rheumatoid is not causing too many problems. This is pretty amazing as only 5 years ago I was in a wheelchair prior to an ankle replacement.
I certainly hope that you feel well on the exemestane. By the way the results of the biopsies taken when I had the colonoscopy reveal inflammatory disease. The problem of diarrhoea may be nothing to do with the drugs. I have to have some more tests. Docs suspect an allergy to wheat. Hope not !
Best wishes Pam
tamoxifen/arimidex Iam 6yrs since being diagnosed with B.C. 3yrs tamx 2yrs arimidex my problem has been sweats throughout. were you offered any help with your sweats and did you still have them on arimx I also have aching joints but can cope. Ladyrumpers,
Arimidex I was on Tamoxifen for 2 years but had to stop due to severe eye damage. Developed a recurrence in 2005 and have been on Arimidex since then. Some hot flushes, but since starting on Seratone 5HTP supplement, they have lessened a lot. Had some joint pains at first and still get ‘tingly’ fingers and hands at night, but have started on high dose calcium and Vit D and the joint pians have completely gone. I am also continuing to take gluccosamine . I am now as fit as before the treatment and have gone back to walking and hiking without too much discomfort.
Hope this helps. It is always worth discussing supplements with your consultant/GP/nurse as they are a lot of different ones out there which are all fine to be taken with Arimidex.

exemestane hi Pam
I have now been on exemestane for almost one month - terrible pains in my hands and wrists - difficulty in holding a pen - doc thinks it could now be carpel tunnel syndrome - the diarrhoea has also started and I’m finding it very difficult to cope with as everything I eat just goes straight through me - did you take any immodium? I’m thinking about it to see if life gets any better before going back to the doctor.
How are you keeping?
Regards
Veronica
Hello there
I have been on tamoxifen for 2 years. Been on Femara for 4 months and started taking anti-inflammatory tablets and joint herbal tablets for just over week for joint hand pain and swelling. Now having investigations to see if I have rheumatoid arthritis because the pains wake me up during the night are quite troublesome. Is anyone taking anti inflammatory tablets while on Femara or other AI’s?
Kind Regards Peach
