Hi Fruitcake - I’m having a lumpectomy on my right breast on the same day - haven’t heard anything about removing lymph nodes but am due for a pre-op assessment tomorrow - maybe there’ll be news of something I wasn’t listening out for (!?) It would be good to compare notes after the event
Good Luck
Maddy
Hi Fruitcake
I had a left mastectomy and full axilliary clearance back in May this year. I have to say that the surgery is probably the easiest part of all this. It wasn’t painful just uncomfortable, and the drains are a relief when they come out, but otherwise nothing to worry about. I had my appendix out in 2001 in it was LOADS worse than the mastectomy, honestly. Make sure you spring up the next day and keep doing the exrecises, and you will be just fine.
Good luck and love

I’m so glad I have noticed this thread and read your post - I am due to have a left mastectomy and node clearance on 3rd October. This morning, I realised it was just two weeks away, and the nerves kicked in. Thanks so much for putting my mind at rest - at least for today - I’m sure I’ll be worse next week and posting “HELP” messages on here !
Fruitcake - I wish you lots of luck for the 25th, I’m sure you’ll be fine honey.
Love to everyone

Hi All
Good luck to Fruitcake and Julie with your operations, can’t give any advice, as surgery not an option for me and straight onto chemo. But hope both your ops go ok and you recovery quickly. Let us know how it goes too and how you are in the meantime.
Take care

Hi Fruitcake
I had lumpectomy (wide local excision) and sentitel node biopsy (node sampling) on the 8th August. It is not that bad really, it will take a while for the underarm area to feel ‘normal’ again. You must do your exercises regularly to improve that. My boob scar was lovely and neat and actually gave me a slight lift!! Such a fine line of scar too. Take the pain meds they offer and keep up the exercises it does improve over a week or so.
Good luck and I hope you meet a nice bunch like I did in hospital.
love Vanessa

Not brave at all - it really is ok or we would tell you. Just make the most of it and milk those visitors! You really will be fine, and I hope your breast nurse reassured you.
Stay in touch and we will be holding your hand.

Hi Fruitcake,
Like everyone says the op really isn’t that bad - i was terrified of the anasthetic but it isn’t that bad…Do try and do the exercises afterwards - they do help (even though it may not seem like it at first). Don’t be surprised if your pee or even your boob(what’s left of it) goes blue - it’s the dye they use. Hope it all goes Ok - try and get some rest when you can - a big boomerang shaped pillow can help get you comfortable , so can wearing a soft maternity bra at night. hope all goes OK
cheers

Hi ladies,
I just wanted to wish you well for your forthcoming ops. I had a right mastectomy and total axillary clearance in Mar, a week after diagnosis, age 34.
The op really wasn’t anywhere near as bad as I had allowed myself to imagine it to be. I was so scared I would be in loads of pain and unable to move but this was really not the case at all. To be honest, for the most part, I was managing quite happily on good old paracetamol! The most annoying thing I found were the 2 drains I had in!!! Sometimes I forgot about them and would try to go wandering off without them. Ouch!!!
The best piece of advice I can give you is to order a copy of the ‘exercises after breast surgery’ booklet from this site and take it in with you. This is invaluable and the exercises complement the ones the physio will give you nicely.
I wish you all well for your forthcoming ops,
Take care and let us know how you get on,
Kelly

Pre-op assessment meeting today was interesting and informative about the process for next Tuesday - 7.30am arrive at hospital,(Glenfield,Leicester) taken for wires to be fitted, then op, recovery, drink and food, out by teatime on same day! - but I still didn’t get the answers to some of my questions. Will I lose my nipple?- ‘You would have been told’ ??? Will they remove lymph nodes for testing? - it’s marked with a tick on the chart so he obviously checked the area - but that may mean it needs testing!!! What about drains? - we don’t get many people with drains, but we do say that it’s small enough to fit in a pocket! (Derby City General give all patients with drains those lovely shiney gift bags to carry it around with - I’m taking one in just in case!) I’ve also had a thought about the radiotherapy but will wait to ask the relevant people when the time comes - my daughter is pregnant and expecting at the beginning of December - should I avoid contact with them both when I’m having treatment???***!! I’d never forgive myself if something happened to the baby. This is beginning to feel like a minefield but I’m staying upbeat about the whole thing (at the moment!)
Love to you all, Maddy x
Hello all
I had a WLE and SNB in aug and have recovered well although arm still aches somedays. Depends on activity.
I am going in next friday for mastectomy with LD recon and totally aux clearance. Not really looking forward to it, but more scared about the chemo to be honest.
Please all take care and this site is just so helpful. Do not know where I would be without it.
Take Care, Love
