effects of radiotherapy

Have just done 7 sessions of rads ,so 10 to go and already feeling quite tired .Was keen to get back to work straight after treatment but not so sure now. Does anybody know roughly how long after rads has ended you feel tired etc… and how long they recommend to have off work. I am a teacher and if anybody out there is a teacher too I 'd love to hear how soon you went back to your classrom. Also feeling quite low psychologically and shoud that be atken into account when deciding when a normal professional life can be resumed.
Any ideas ? Thanks

Hi froggy

I went back to work 6 weeks after Rads. I am a classroom assistant in a large secondary school working with pupils who have various learning difficulties and also pupils with Autism so it can be quite stressful at times.

I went back to work on a phased return for 6 weeks, starting off with 2 days a week then 3 and then full time. I was advised at my hospital not to do half days as this can be more tiring. I found that I was very tired at the beginning but things improved as the weeks went on.

I think it all depends on the individual and how they cope with things, butIi would certainly advise you to go back on a phased return as your body is still getting back to normal for a long time after.

I actually worked through my radiotherapy. I am a teacher in a secondary school and i taught in the morning - rads in the afternoon - 30 session. I was tired and it took me about 4 weeks to regain my strength. I am now back at work full time after finishing rads in the start of Feb. For me normality was what I wanted. I must admit that now I am back at work full time, I wish I had taken more time off!

I was one of the very lucky patients who managed to sail through radiotherapy. During that 5 week period I actually felt a bit like my old self again. I was treated first thing in the morning so back home again by just after 11 despite it being a 50 mile round trip. Got very tired around 8.30 in the evening though. Chemo was a different story, Taxotere wiped me out for 5 months and I didn’t feel reasonably normal until months after I finished it.
