Over a year ago I had a lumpectomy followed by 7 months of chemo and 6 weeks of radiation I have always said to my surgeon that I wanted both of Now today he has refused this saying that it wont improve my chance but mentally Im in peices every pain every lump has me worried sick to the extent i am back on anti depressants I have now told my surgeon that if he is not willing to do this then I wont be back for any appointments and will take my chances has anyone else exprienced this according to him in normal to feel this way after treatment but I had decided this before I even had first surgery

Hi Joanne

I had an appointment today with my oncologist about various things including telling him that I wished I had had my good breast taken off at the same time as diseased one. I told him that it was doing my head in and I could feel all lumps and bumps and that I had had long enough to think about it. So as a result, I’m being referred back to my consultant who performed my original mastectomy to discuss this and also reconstruction. I cannot see them refusing me this and my oncologist even got the ball rolling by requesting the appointment with my consultant. I believe you do have a say and that if your surgeon won’t listen to you, then maybe you should ask your GP to refer you somewhere else if possible. I so understand where you are coming from and I hope that you can get this sorted.

Best wishes

Hi, I too wanted both breasts removed at the time of diagnosis but was asked to think again and was told that it could always be done at a later stage. However, when I requested it 2 years on, I was told that I would have to see a counsellor and the genetics team and ultimately it would be their descision. Good news is that after seeing them, they have both agreed I can have a risk reducing mastectomy providing my Breast Consultant also agreed - which he did so just waiting for an op date now. They dont have to do it for no good reason so write a letter of complaint but make sure you have done your homework and can give a good argument, stressing that to not have it done is causing you extreme anxiety and depression.
Good luck,
Clarabelle x
