Employer problems.....

I have been off work this week with a chest infection [I work with small children] on top of that I’ve been quite stressed too, had to have another FNA a few weeks ago…which fortnately was ok…but stressing waiting for results tooke me back to day one, work has been stressful with lots of staff and routine changes.
Well I rang employer earlier to confirm I would be back on Monday and told her I’d been stressed too her reply…
‘’ I don’t know why your stressed you only work part-time [i work 30 hours a week],
you just have to come in do your job and go home, I’m stressed because I work fulltime running/owning 2 nurseries and am doing a NVQ and a degree, perhaps you should look for another job, I could find someone to replace you and give you 4 wks notice’’
I am so angry, I go in at 7.30 4 mornings a week to open up as no-one else wants to do it, I 've changed my hours around frequently to accomodate other staff, I’ve stood in for deputy at short notice…and this is all the thanks I get arrrrrrrgggggghhh.

That is a disgraceful way to speak to anyone. I am so sorry that your employer is such a rude woman. Is she normally like this or was she just having a bad day (still no excuse to speak to you in that way tho). I would ask to speak to her when you return and say that you are unhappy about the comments she has made - pander to her a bit and say u understand that she is stressed too but the things that are stressing her are things she has chosen to take upon herself whereas bc is not something you have chosen to have in your life. I think she will find that she cannot simply find someone to replace you and give you your notice. remind her that you have taken the early start that no-one else wants and that in the past you have been very flexible about changing hours to cover for others etc. If you are seriously worried that she may try to pay you off it might be worth seeking some professional advice at this point just so you know the facts of what can and can’t be done before she makes a move.

Every time I read about someone having problems like this it makes me realise just how lucky I am with my current employers.

Hi Karen

She doesnt sound very professional. Its not your problem about her work/life balance, however it is her problem about yours as you are the employee who has had breast cancer. I hate these petty bosses who can’t cope with their lives so get personal about their employees. I left a practice like this last year where because the owner had taken on too much, they had absolutely no sympathy for anyone who was ill or needed time off and would get nasty. They used to bully the young dental nurses and make them feel terrible if they were off sick. I left to join a big hospital, just in time because now I have needed stacks of time off and they couldn’t be more accommodating and helpful, even though I have only been there a few months. Like Lilac says, I thank my lucky stars for my present boss. Its a pity you cant call her bluff and leave the job especially if you find have another.

Good luck

Cathy
