ERROR MESSAGE : cooking : HOW TO PREVENT INFECTIONS : READ

Hi,

If your immune system is weak you have to ask your team (oncologist and reg dietitian that have to collaborate together) about the foods you can eat or not in order to avoid infections.

I read you have to wash and cook all fruits and vegetables. (just washing seems not to be enough according to what I read)

I wrote in one of my former post about steaming. Ask if it’s efficient, and if yes how long we have to steam the food to kill the bacterias (I think it could be different for each foodstuff) .

There are other methods like boiling in hot water (I read it can make loose a part of the properties of some food)

So on summary ask the best method to kill the bacterias and if possible to preserve the properties of the food.

When your immune system is better the situation is different and you will be able to eat and cook differetely (for instance by preserving the the nutrients).
HERE IS ANOTHER INFORMATION ABOUR PEELING
If your immune system is weak I read we have to cook everything so I am not sure that peeling is useful. I’ts better to ask your medical team.
And generally (if your immune system is weak or not) peeling or not depends on many factors. The skin contains nutriments but can also contain pesticides. So it depends of if the fruits and vegetables contains pesticides or not, the kind of fruit, and so on.
I also read that if we have to peel, the more peels are fine, the less we lose of nutriments.
But anyway I am not a doctor and this is not a medical advise, just an information I read, Ask your medical team before doing anything. I whish you the best for the future.

But ask

HAve A nice day

I wrote a new version of my message

Just to throw a spanner in the works I asked my team about foods to avoid having been told not to eat soft cheese, shellfish etc etc. I asked my onc and he said there is no reason why you can’t eat them. I think the idea is that you are more likely to be I’ll if these foodstuffs are not absolutely fresh. It’s a case of common sense and good basic food hygiene. I. Eat just what I fancy now, I eat out but know that where I eat has good food safety. I eat takeaways, but only from places that I know well.
I eat lots of veg and fruit, I don’t peel apples for example but just wash them. I do now buy pre packed apples etc and don’t buy them loose to avoid bugs and bacteria that some other people may have transferred onto them by handling them But veg is ok because they are cooked.

Yes,

But it depends on how low your immune system is.

If it’s very weak, some foods that are usueally not dangerous can become dangerous. And sometimes washing is maybe not enough.

Some cheese contains bacterias too.

You are right there. But my system although at it’s lowest on day 14 of cycle has never been low enough to stop chemo. So far anyway. I wouldn’t eat Stilton or similar cheeses so you have a point. I don’t eat yoghurt with active stuff in it either. But I love a bit of Brie or camembert. My onc is happy for me to eat them, also medium rare steak. Perhaps it depends on your location what your team recommends.

Hi sylvana,I have noticed that you are on other cancer forums giving advice on different types of cancer and using different names peter12,steel15 and ladylady. In one of your posts you say “But as I say even if i am a scientist”.Others have asked you to share your diagnosis but you haven’t replied. Was just wondering if you have had a breast cancer diagnosis.

Feeling quiete uneasy about these dubious posters. Are they on these forums to groom for potential business? I know this is a public forum but there have been imposters & businesses lately posting which I find inappropriate.

I would agree, there is a fine line between helpful advice and messages which seem to come from “outside of the community,” not that anyone wants to deter new posters but if the inference is that the messages may be there for other reasons or be generic to several forums then I am less sure of their value or place here.

Perhaps the moderators could take a look at this thread and take a view??

Hi

We the moderators are aware that some people may try to use the forums in a fashion that is not considered ‘within the guidelines’. Should any users fall into this catagory we will deal with them accordingly.

Many thanks
June, moderator

on the other forums the mods or nurses are quick to put statements and advice after sylvana,peter12 etc have posted .Maybe he/she thinks they are giving good advice or helping in someway.but it seems very strange to me to post identical posts on different forums. On one forum he/she is even giving advice about hot beverages and the oesophagus.

Hi Stressy Messy,
I only use this forum, so unlike you would not know these near identical posts are appearing elsewhere. Whilst not overtly contravening the guidelines for this forum, the two threads Sylvana (whoever s/he is) has begun feel rather odd… nothing about herself/himself just a set of statements with no real context. Quite what the aim is, I cannot deduce - no direct advertising and nothing that looks overtly dangerous to my untrained eye. Perhaps this is someone trying to be helpful but it does feel ‘not quite right’ to me too.

I guess it is just a reminder to all of us to remain vigilant even when we are vulnerable… and that is far from easy. We can always report threads/posts if we are troubled by them and I know the mods take all reports seriously. Meantime, if anyone reading this thread is anxious about any dietary matters, speak to your own medical team and they will advise you.

Hi I only use this forum too lol,it’s just that I mentioned sylvana’s posts to a friend who is a member of another cancer forum and she said the same posts were on there and then I just got a bit intrigued (sad I know)

Melxx

I would feel very silly to have responded to this thread. Grrrrrrr

Thanks Mel for being vigilant, and for posting - it looked odd to me too, but I’m afraid I just sat back and let it pass even though a bit of me felt that was wrong.

Thanks again,
Julie

My thread title starts with ‘ERROR MESSAGE’ which is a bit odd too. There may be a valid reason but…

Good point Sadie. I am SO dim sometimes 8-(

Cromey you are not dim, you are vulnerable, there’s a world of difference. Hope that doesn’t sound too patronising, because it’s true. And that’s what iffy message posters play on.

Like Julie/Geewhiz I mostly ignore these strange posts and hope they’ll go away, but now and then they need to be flagged up for what they are.

StreesyMessy I’m glad it isn’t just me that gets intrigued and follows things up. I’m glad you did because it might help us all be a little more vigilant for a while at least.

You are right Revcat. It’s my desire to help any new posters. I shall be a little more careful now

I’m glad this whole subject has been raised.
I’m probably being really naive or stupid here but what is the point of being a bogus poster? I can understand if someone tries to sell something or encourage the use of a particular service etc but just to post? Or is that just the start?

Even if someone posts elsewhere with similar things using a different name why would that make them a bogus poster?

I’m guessing if moderators have stepped in on other sites then they know a bit more. I did think the heading on this post was very odd but the message seemed well intentioned.

Can anyone enlighten me because I also feel a bit dim and it’s a bit scary.

Trolls and cyber munchies ( munchausens). I had experience with somebody pretending to be dying ( a long time ago on another site).
She had us all sucked in. She was only identified due to inconsistencies in her story by very vigilant moderators.

The desire for attention by such bizarre means is recognised as a mental illness and is becoming more common.

Why would people want to write nasty things on dead peoples Facebook pages ? Why do people pretend they have cures ? Why would that woman pretend she was dying on a Secondary Chat room ?

Who knows? We should be thankful that observant people notice these things. They may be something or may be something. I still feel very hurt and betrayed by the person that sucked me in.
