Exercise after recon

Hi all
4 and half years after bilat mastectomies and chemo and rad I have recently had recon with expanders (didnt want the LD) and am just wondering whether anyone has advice about exercise after the op? Its been 6 weeks and am desperate to start doing something, being in the house is doing my nut in! and am putting on weight as theres nowt else to do!
My Oncoplastic surgeon said yes i can go back to running etc but dont do any upper limb stuff. After stating that running involves moving your arms he said it will be alright…i hope i dont have to eat my words over that…WHAT DOES THAT MEAN!!! Advice from you guys, as always is worth it.
Thanks

Hi

I also had a bilateral mastectomy 7 weeks ago but with immediate recon.

I was allowed to go back to exercising from 6 weeks following my surgery. My consultant suggested Swimming was good to help stretch my chest muscles before I started running again.

I didn’t think I would manage a length when I got into the pool this Monday, but it got easier when my muscles started to warm up and I managed 14. I have been 4 times this week and managed an extra 2 lengths each day. Hopefully will do 22 today. I find that I can only do breast stroke and I’m not sure that I do a proper stroke. I can’t do front crawl or back stroke as yet as I can’t lift my arms that far over my head, think this may have something to do with having Sentinel Nodes removed as it is more sore on the right than on the left.

You might be able to build up quicker than I as I had my Gallbladder removed in January and never fully recovered my fitness before returning to work, only to be diagnosed with BC which let to my mastectomy in April.

So… I’m going to continue going to the swimming pool next week, then I hoping the following week to ride my bike to the swimming pool (2 miles) then return to the gym stepper and runner before going back to road running. I usually do 3.5 miles a day with my dogs. (They walk, I run !!)

Wishing you well with your exercise.
