Exercise and Heartrate

Hi , This might seem like a strange topic but bear with me .
I´m trying to get fitter , so that I an loose the extra weight i´ve put on , plus hopefully keep my joints and bones healthy .
I´ve always walked at least an hour every morning with my dig .,but I needed to do something a bit more drastic .
Ijoined a gym last week with the intention of using a few of their machines and to do a pilates class twice a week .
After the class today I went onto the bike , set it on level one and began to pedal . It was fine , my heartrate was between 128 -140 .
I noticed my heart rate was begining to go up even though I was´nt peddling any harder ,but I realised that I was getting that strange feeling where you know you are getting a hot flush.
My heartrate then went up to 265 . By now i had stopped completely but it stayed there , eventually very slowly it began to go back down .
Anyone any idea if this is normal , cos I tell you it had me worried.I always knew I felt strange and pretty awful when one klicked in , but i never realised just what it wa actually doing .
Sorry but it has got me worried .
Kris

Hi Kris,

That is definitely not normal. What kind of heart rate monitor was it? Sometimes the ones that are part of the machines can be inaccurate and its much better to wear a proper one that has a band round your chest. I think you should try a different machine and see if it happens again.

The hot flush feeling could be normal. It always takes a few minutes for your body to warm up, and even if you don’t increase the intensity of the exercise you may find you feel hotter and start sweating.

Incidentally, in a Weightwatchers meeting few weeks ago we had to do a quiz that guessed how many points were used up by different forms and durations of exercise. You may be pleasantly surprised to know that walking the dog for an hour a day was actually a lot better than 3 intense sessions in the gym or playing in a football match a couple of times a week, or even swimming for half an hour each day! Don’t beat yourself up, just maybe increase your walking pace a bit.

Hi kris,

265 is very fast have you had your blood pressure and heart-rate checked.I have high blood pressure and a fast heart-rate and am on medication.I also get an unwell feeling and can feel my heart beat faster when a flush begins.

hi kris,

i have just had the same experience.

started back to the gym last week and was very gentle with myself but went yesterday and today deciding to give myself a proper workout and both times my heart rate went shooting up.

it got up to 215 and was flashing red on the machine! i also had the strange flush feeling.

i too am worried as i have had a lot of fluid retention lately and have put it down to the hormone therapy as it is not something i have ever suffered with before. now i am panicking that it may be a heart problem!

i go to see my onc on monday so will have to discuss it with him.

i agree it was not a nice feeling.

best wishes

gill

Hello

I’d definately get checked out if I were you and please do it before you do anymore exercise.
My chemo was stopped because it made my heart go over 250 and my Onc was worried it could do permenant damage. I think the flush feeling is a change in blood pressure as that’s how I feel as my blood pressure drops along with the heart rate increase. Please look after yourself and get it checked.

Take care x

I walk a lot but on Tamoxifen having trouble with my ankle joints - my GP has said that it is better to do 30 mins fast walk per day than an hour if my ankles wont do it. He said the important thing is to get the heart rate up a bit and then you know your exercising right. He also said all the usual dont go mad ext. Well I started to do that and yes the heart starts pumping and I became extremely hot but I persevered and now it doesnt affect me like that because I am fitter. I think if you are starting anew then exercise could affect your organs because they are not used to the strain.

I would also point out that I had been checked by ECG/ultrasound before I started this exercise. Please go to the doctor and check with him before pushing on and then you will know exactly what you can do. He will check heart rate and blood pressure.

Walking is excellent exercise and its free - you can burn loads of calories and expand your lungs. Look at some websites; weightlossresources.co.uk/exercise/plans/walking_fitness.htm,
