Have you had any heart tests during your treatment? My HR still gets quite high compared to my effort levels when I’m running. I’ll be running along, chatting easily as I go and I can even sing while my heart is in 170-180 range which would be Z4 in the olden days. Since my scans are all fine, doctors are unbothered by the high HR.
I’m sure your dad means well but if it feels okay to you and you’ve had checks of your heart, I would just continue doing what you’re doing.
Thank you for sharing! That’s interesting you have experienced something similar. I am due to have an echocardiogram on Wednesday (I think as standard). Hopefully the results from that will be reassuring. I know what you mean - it doesn’t feel like my HR is that high even if it is!
Hi, I was the same. My heart rate would go higher but I just kept an eye on it and if I got too close to my max heart rate I’d slow down for a min or so till it dropped a little then I’d go again so long as I felt ok. It defo spiked a lot quicker than before chemo, particularly when I ran rather than doing spin classes etc. All my heart scans were fine and I’m finding things easier now I’m done - my heart rate was lower than my husbands for the first time in 20 months after a run we done together yesterday (I got ECT last year then was on Kadcyla for 10 months which I just finished mid September)
Morning all, I’m on week 10 of 12 weekly cycles of Paclitaxol and the main side effect i’ve had for the last few weeks is neuropathy in my feet. They reduced the dose and I’ve had a weeks break which has improved things so I’m gritting my teeth and sucking up the last couple of cycles….really don’t want to but it is what it is. Teh neuorpathy is there and its damaged my toe nails on my left foot. Its also started making my fingernails hurt. I think the winter cold is not helping though. In case anyone else is getting problems, I thought I’d share what I’ve tried. If anyone has any other suggestions please let me know. Thing’s I’ve tried:
polybalm every day on toe and finger nails.
plasters over my toe nails and some silicon protectors over my toes.
I’ve just come back from morning circuits in the park, it was lovely in the sun but freezing! But I managed 4 sprints and jog/fast walk there and back
So far so good looking at my toes.
I haven’t really cried much with chemo, I feel like this whole cancer and chemo has tried to take alot from me, which makes me furious, but I did this morning coming home. 18 days left to go then I’m done
Hello fellow exercise lovers. Does anyone have experience running after starting aromatase inhibitors or tamoxifen? Im feeling a bit pessimistic today about these.
I didn’t have chemo, so haven’t been involved in this discussion before, but I am very interested in exercise and breast cancer and noticed your questions about tamoxifen and radiotherapy. I strength train and run and neither of those treatments have caused any issues for me in terms of exercising. My oncologist said there were no restrictions on any activities during radiotherapy so I carried on as usual (I only had five days). I did have one weekend where I was too tired for anything but that soon passed. Tamoxifen hasn’t affected my exercise at all. If anything, and I may be wrong, I’m convinced the exercise I do is the reason I don’t have any problems. x
@southwest123 you may be right re the exercise being protective. Certainly there’s evidence that those who exercise during radiotherapy get less fatigue later.
Thanks for the positive. Sometimes you just need a good story to motivate you.
I have a run / walk strategy and I did have a dip in heart function during chemo so I used to run according to my heart rate- once it hit 155-160 I’d walk regardless of my intervals until it went down. But keep running!
I also wore compression socks overnight whilst still on chemo /.and Kadcyla. The neuropathy remains in my right foot 6 months on and I think this is permanent now but it’s changed sensation and some numbness, not affecting toe nails
I’m on Letrozole and it does cause joint and muscle pain but movement / running does actually help, though it takes a while to loosen up. My issue currently is intense fatigue - 6 months post Kadcyla and 15 months of Letrozole. Dexa scan results yesterday show I have got osteopenia too the gift that keeps giving!!
Dear sb, Thinking of you, as you said everyone is different, please take one day at a time, be kind to yourself, a little walk when you feel up to it, also a coffee with that special friend I find always helps.
Wishing you health and happiness going forward into 2026
Morning! I’ve been struggling to exercise and it has been getting me down. I came into this cancer journey with an acute bulging disc and sciatica problem meaning my beloved walking was out of the question. I started the gym to do upper body work to strengthen my back and was loving my arm shape. Alas that can’t be done now due to PICC line.
I have had to resort to a 4 wheel walker with seat. I feel a bit of a berk using it, but it has made a massive difference. Just getting outdoors is making all the difference.
Any tips on safe arm exercises I can do would be much appreciated. I have back exercises given to me by the gym to support my back problem.
@Jaygo when I had my picc I did weights up to 4kg and any body weight stuff I wanted. It was fine. Ironically now I don’t have it ive lost the regular weights habit and need to start again!
Couple of weeks ago I lost all motivation for exercise as I felt so low . I set the new goal of running (10km) to radiotherapy sessions. That really picked me up.
Now I’ve done radiotherapy and am into the next chapter but still ache and look like a chemo patient……so I need to get a new routine in especially now im working more.
Thanks ever so much. I’ve postponed my gym membership until July, but I can do some light lifting at home when my energy permits. I will assume unless advised otherwise it is safe to go above shoulder height if common sense prevails.
Thank you for this thread its very inspiring! I loved treadmill running a couple of years ago. I cant imagine my boob allowing me to run again although I’m definitely bouncing down the stairs a bit easier now haha
I wonder if anyone has any good beginner youtube videos for exercise at home? Or someone they follow online that has videos to follow?
Movement is so important to me. When I’m sad or depressed I freeze up. And then I end up with awful muscle tension. Thats the reason I stopped running. Through bad posture and anxiety I ended up injuring my neck and stopped all exercise except walking. I love walking but sometimes I think if I could do a 15 minute video at home each day, that might really help get my up and out the house more.
I started yoga last year which was wonderful but I have to wait a few more weeks before I can start that again.
