Exercising After Mastectomy

I had a double mastectomy without reconstruction 5 years ago this month.  I try to lead a normal life and have joined a Gym where I attend classes.  I try to participate in everything but don’t use too heay weights.  I am unsure though exactly what I should and shouldn’t do regarding exercise, and am hoping that maybe a health professional or someone in the know may be able to advise.  In the class that I attend on a Monday evening they have started to do lots of press ups, planks etc and I am not really comfortable with these.  My arms feel very weak, but I don’t like to draw attention to myself by not doing certain exercises as I haven’t made anyone aware of my history.  Recently after a class I awoke the next morning with a stiff neck and my neck/top of my back has been aching since then.  I believe I have pulled something and am wondering whether I should stop attending this class as it is inapproprite for me.  If anyone can advise me on this I would be most grateful.  Thanks x.

Hi sunnyday

Whilst you are waiting for the other users to reply with their experience you might find it helplful to talk things through with a member of staff on the BCC helpline.  Here you can share your thoughts and concerns with somone who will offer you a listening ear as well as emotional support and practical information. The number to call is 0808 800 6000 and lines will open again on Tuesday at 9am and are normally open weekdays 9 to 5pm and Saturday 10 to 2pm.

Best wishes Sam, BCC Facilitator

Hi - I would have a quiet word with the person taking the class and they should be able to advise you.  I started doing Pilates last year and have found it great.  I haven’t mentioned my mastectomy as I didn’t think it relevant for the kind of exercises we were doing but have mentioned other problems and the trainer has been great at suggesting alternatives where appropriate.  We sometimes do the plank and I have to say I am rubbish at it - not sure whether that’s the mastectomy or just general lack of fitness!

Sunnyday you really should mention it to your instructor. They are very good at coming up with alternatives especially if you are new to exercise. I went back to yoga 3 weeks after my MX last sept. I’ve kept it up 4-5 times a week throughout Chemo and now back to combat and the gym. All the instructors are aware of my limitations and offer options for me to take.
