I had an expander implant put in November last year. Approximately 1 year after mx on my right side. I have been attending the hospital every two weeks for an infill of saline. I measure about a 32 d on my left so have had to have a lot of fluid put in to stretch the skin. I am now on 400 ml+. I knew it was going to be uncomfortable and was fully prepared for that, however I am in a lot of pain especially under my arm and tend to suffer more at night. I know this will be worth it in the end but just wondered if this was normal and if the pain will eventually subside. I think I have one more infil to go. Any words of wisdom appreciated ![]()

I had expander fitted June 2013 at time of Mastectomy. It was filled to 750mls over 4 sessions (Ouch!!). It had to be done quickly as i was then having Radiotherapy. It hurt a lot at each fill (I am pretty tough but needed analgesia and a lie down each time). It was extremely uncomfortable for weeks after, during which i was applying Almond Oil then went on to aqueous cream during Radiotherapy. Expander still in place with minimal distortion during rads and the only discomfort i experience now is on the edge of the radiotherapy field (across the top) and that feels bruised. I have asked the Oncologist and he reckons that is quite common. Looking forward to reconstruction being completed later this year and left side being matched up.
It is quite heavy which i think causes discomfort at night. I couldn’t lie on my side and still have a little bit of lymphodema where all lymph nodes were removed so tend to sleep on my back slightly sat up with 2/3 pillows.
I continue to use Almond Oil or Rose Oil. Since treatment all my skin in terribly dry and i take Tamoxifen so i think that may contribute. I use the oil ./ cream all over my skin. I do feel that i’m pretty high maintenance since treatment.
Good Luck with the next infill. Gilly x
