Extending treatment

Hi everyone,

When I saw my oncologist last week one of the things she mentioned was that she would like me to seriously consider extending hormone therapy by a couple of years. I know it’s probably due to two factors - my crappy survival figures and the fact that the majority of the cancer (I had 3 different types) was strongly ER+. I was just wondering if anyone else had opted to extend their treatment past five years and what the pros/cons of that were.

As I’m 49 and it looks like my periods have now permanently stopped I am likely to be swapped from Tamoxifen to an AI in 12 to 18 months time.

Hi
I am 43 and completed 5 yrs tamoxifen - i am currently awaiting menopause status and if post then I will also be on further treatment - my bloods were inconclusive so i have agreed to take part in a fertility trial that scans the ovaries and gives a definite answer for my onc to make decision - think it is quite normal to extend and switch but depends on menopause.

I was diagnosed at 45, had 5 years Tamoxifen, now year 3 of 5 years Letrozole. I think that it is recommended that after Tamoxifen and those women that are postmenopausal, AIs are used for a period but I was told at first it would be 3 years AI but now 5 years and that seems to vary. My tumour was small but out of 17 nodes removed 6 were cancerous so my BC surgeon has said that is probably why my Onc has now said 5 years.

Thanks for your feedback ladies - much appreciated!
