False Ones and what happens next
False Ones and what happens next Hi
As many of you will know I have had a mastectomy and have opted not to have a reconstruction.
I went to hospital this week expecting to get my prothesis instead of my softies.
As the wound is healing nicely but the skin surrounding it is so swollen - this has not happened.
I am to contact the breast care nurse when I feel I will be comfortable enough to put a false one against the skin.
I have seen other posts which say they have different ones to suit their mood. I only had one breast removed so thought I would just get a false one to match the other.
Can someone please offer me advice on what to expect when I am ready to go to hospital to obtain one.
Many thanks
Fee
Dear Fee Breast Cancer Care have published a booklet called ‘A confident choice’ which contains information and advice about prostheses, bras and clothing following breast surgery. You can read it via the following link:

I hope you find this helpful.

Hi I had a mastectomy last year. i could n’t have a reconstruction straight away as it seemed likely I’d need rads, which I did. I was told I’d have to wait a year after the end of rads before a recon was possible. I’ve decided not to have one due to the limitations I’ve been warned I’ll be left with. I was fitted with a silicone prosthesis about 3 weeks after my surgery. My BC nurse did the fitting, in a private room at the hospital. Basically she tried to find a shape and size that was as close a match to my remaining breast as possible. I also have 2 swimforms that she got for me. One I keep in my swim suit all of the time and the other I wear when i go to the gym or if I’m wearing strappy tops with hidden support. The swimform is also handy to wear as sometimes I find I’m a bit sore–this seems to be a hangover from rads. I got some good pocketed bras which are worth every penny. The silicone prosthesis sits very well in the pocket and the pocket stops it from sticking to your skin or making unattractive “farty” noises.

FALSE ONES Hi Geraldine
Thank you for your detailed reply.
I am very grateful to you for taking the time to reply to me.
I am still waiting for the swelling and soreness to disappear before I get measured but each day is getting slightly easier.
How are you getting on?
Thinking of you.

false ones Hi Fee
I am in the same position as you at the moment. Can’t wait to get my
real prostheses. I am finding the softies difficult to keep level, of course I tell everyone the pert one is the real one!
Would love to get back swimming as well, as I hope this will help keep
the movement in my arm good, so it was very interesting hearing that
they give you special ones for different activities, I wonder do you have to buy these or do you just get them?
Hope I don’t get one that makes ‘farting’ noises (can make those myself!)
Hugs
Helen
False Ones What Happens Next Hi Helen
Thanks for your reply it cheered me.
Its a shame we find ourselves in this situation but we are the lucky ones. Or so I am constantly told.
I hope you get fitted soon and find a prothesis that suits you soon.
Hugs
