Fashion, Clothes, Campaign to Get Retailers to Cater To Us!

Hello all,
A few months back I asked for help on a project to get retailers to help us with the various problems caused by bc surgery and treatement, in finding decent,confidence-giving clothes. My friend Libby has now made this short documentary featuring three of us, and a woman who’s photo features in the Scars Project. I do hope you like the film. We need maximum publicity, and in particular comments and ‘likes’ on the You Tube page. This is where Libby will be directing retailers, so please help us to show them how many of us there are, and that it is worth their while to help us. Any comments on the film will be very valuable. Thanks, Lynne

Hi Lynne,
spotted your comment on the equivalent thread I started… hopefully with two threads we can double the number of people who spot the link and respond! libby did a brill job

For anyone wondering the other thread is share.breastcancercare.org.uk/forum/%22fashion%CA%B9s-latest-victims%22-clothes-after-surgery–t35499.html which also has a link for the SCAR project website

Hi Lynne

thanks for posting the video link - it’s fantastic and so moving. Libby is an amazing person for highlighting this problem in such a sensitive way and connecting in the Scar project photos was very powerful too. Let’s hope that High Street retailers take up the challenge. Elinda x

bumpimg in case anyone is interested and hasn’t seen this yet

One thing I was thinking about all this is women who have had a single mx talk about being lopsided. You’d think having had a double mx then it would be easier to get a bra. Wrong! I spent nearly an hour in the specialist mx bra shop and tried on loads. Finally I found one that was suitable. All the others either gaped near the armpit (as there is so little tissue on the chest), or rubbed right on my scar or pushed out the dog ear at the end or just felt really uncomfortable.

I had wanted wider straps as I have a shoulder problem but no chance there.

Would be nice if specialist bra manufacturers could consider those dog ears that some of us and scarring in that area too. All it needs is for the bra to come up higher under the armpit area.

Sorry for the moan but it’s so frustrating! Elinda x

Thank you for posting this. It made me cry because it is so flipping true - where are the pretty clothes and underwear for post-surgery women? I have found the whole experience something of a nightmare as I have found it virtually impossible to find anything that works and is pretty. As a result I now live in t-shirts and jeans with all my pretty clothes either hidden in the back of the wardrobe or consigned to the charity shop. I can’t tell you how many times I have walked around the high street desperate for something else to wear and then come home empty-handed and in tears.

Thank you *so much* Libby for helping make the fashion world take notice of us!

I have already started a ‘share campaign’ via Facebook.

Well done for highlighting this problem, I wish I had the knowelege to provide this service it would be a real money maker !!
Seriously though the video is brilliant and I have shared via Twitter and Facebook to help get the message out.
I have n’t been able to wear a bra for longer than a couple of hours due to discomfort, I also live in loose clothes to minimise the look of lopsidedness.

Whilst there are pretty undies and clothes out there for post surgery women, I do tend to find they are often very expensive. For everyday wear, I can’t really justify spending 40 quid on a bra with about 20 for the matching knickers. When you do see budget priced stuff it tends to be a bit limited in range and colour. Retailers are starting to get better, but I wish they’d take note. You may have had breast surgery but you shouldn’t have to lose sight of your femininity.

I thought it was just me. I have hasd a single mastectomy. Thought I would be fine with the supposed specialist underwear. I agree with everyone with the problems of clothing. The underwear is very expensive! I find it difficult to find a top that covers my scar so I am forever readjusting my tops so no-one can see.Lets hope the fashion industry will listen as I want to be able to dress as normally as possible and that makes me feel feminine too !

i have shared this on my FB it will be interesting to see if i get any comments… as altough I tell people what a problem it is, how can they understand?!
bra and pants that match… dream on!!

Loved the film and its real sufferers not how people think we feel. The underwear that comes in sets can be expensive and especially nice swimwear. Oh to go to a high street shop and get what we used to get.

So glad it’s not just me. How can the price of mastectomy clothing possibly be justified?? £20 minimum for a simple strappy top / cami, just because it has pockets?? Come on, people, that can’t be right…

Thought film really got message over well. Finding decent fitting clothes and bras is something ladies at my local support group talk about a lot. We’ve got a retailer called Belovely Designs coming in to show us a new clothing range they’ve designed for ladies who’ve had breast cancer. Have had quick look on their website - seem to have some pretty stuff - will let you know what think when they come to the group!
