Hi Jo,

I wonder whether you could clarify regarding the Terms and Conditions as this is something that has been puzzling me for a while. The relevant bits of the Terms and Conditions say:

“You agree that you will not use the forums to post any material, or links to any material, which is knowingly false, defamatory, libellous, inaccurate, abusive, extremist, hateful, harassing, pornographic, obscene, profane, sexually orientated, offensive, racist, homophobic, ageist, threatening, invasive of a person’s privacy, or otherwise in violation of any law.”

and

“Breast Cancer Care does not link to any third party site other than recognised registered charities or relevant partners, and will not endorse any site for which they cannot ensure either reliability of information or confidentiality of users.”

I don’t think the link to the song violates the first one, so I presume the removal of the link to it relates to the second, and that the reason for the removal is the inability to verify reliability or confidentiality.

Neither of the quotations above actually says we cannot put links into our posts per se, and on that basis I have myself put links into my posts in the past. For example, in a recent discussion in Employment and Financial Issues I put links to a European Court of Justice judgement and also to some HR legal advice that was being given to employers, but those weren’t removed, so I assume they are OK.

So my questions are:

Are all links in posts not allowed?

If not, are there some criteria that haven’t been included in the T&C regarding what is acceptable?

If not, then are BCC happy for us to include the links and let moderators decide which ones are OK?

I think it is sometimes very helpful to be able to include links, but I don’t want to violate the T&C because my interpretation is different to the intended one. On the other hand, I think the lack of clarity may be preventing some people from including valid links that might be very useful.

Thanks in advance.

Hi jansman

Just to clarify the situation,

We won’t allow links to:
websites with unproven information
any sort of sales pitch
unsolicited research
fundraising asks
private sites
sites that can’t be checked by our team

We may allow links to:
blogs relating personal experience of (breast) cancer
specialist shops recommended by registered users
support group websites
other sites that may be of benefits to our users

Our team of hosts will check links posted on the forums and will decide if the links should be allowed or not.

And of course a link on the Breast Cancer Care forums doesn’t mean that we endorse or support the site being linked to.

Regards
June, moderator
