Hello all

My Hubbie found a lump in my left breast a few months ago and as I’ve got lumpy boobs which are 36F I just put it down to that. As I had hysterectomy at 33, I don’t have periods, so hormonely my boobs shouldn’t really change. Anyway I’m going through a lot of other health issues and surgeries at present, so was at the doctors on the 1st June and asked GP to check it whilst I was there.I really expected her to just say it was my ‘lumpy’ boobs and normal. But she went straight to her phone and rang what I heard was the breast clinic and requested that I been seen that day. Apparently they told her they couldn’t but would fast-rack me urgently (within 2 weeks as everyone already knows on here).

She explained that as my Grandma had had breast cancer and also my auntie, (both maternal side) and my mum and younder sister had had lumpectomy’s in the past with atypical cells, the lump needed checking out. She is sending me to St Lukes, in Bradford to the One Stop Clinic, and they will do a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy there, and to expect to be there around 5 hours.
She also asked when I started my periods, which was 9, and if I’d breastfed and a few other things. I asked if she though the lump was a cyst, but she didn’t comment and continued to look at her screen. She said the lump was 2cm, probably in width, although felt longer in length, it is right under my left nipple/areola and she said it was immobile and palpable? It is not painful, although I do have a lump in my left armpit which hurts a bit when she pressed it. My breast aches a bit when I’ve palpated the lump, so trying not to bother it, although like all you ladies say its hard not to. I keep feeling for it and get excited when I can’t instantly feel it, hoping that its gone but then I do.

The next day the breast clinic rang me with an appointment for Monday the 14th June, I was a bit disappointed it was so long to wait (even though for NHS this is good), as my hubbie had just gone away working in France and isn’t home until 18th June, so haven’t told him as don’t want to worry him if its nothing. My lovely mum is coming with me to the clinic so I do have family support.

So its just a waiting game now - I’ve discussed with a few people and all have said that I should not just have a mammogram and US as some people have, as due to my large breasts and the dense tissue, any lump should be biopsed to double check all ok, is this right?

I’m sure it will be fine and is probably just a cyst as I’ve had cysts in my mouth, (behind wisdom teeth) and also lots on my ovaries, due to endometriosis but its a very worrying time.

Any feedback or similar stories and outcomes would be great. Its worth noting that a recent bloodtest showed my white blood cells were low and due to my other illnesses my immune system is greatly supressed at present. My GP said that some cancers can be brought on by stress?

Thanks for listening/reading, sometimes it helps to just type out those fears.

Love to all the worriers and fighters out there, brave women that you all are.

Hi Leighmcl,

I thought it might be helpful to post a link to the BCC publication, Referral to a Breast Clinic:

breastcancercare.org.uk/upload/pdf/referral_redesign__final_14_feb_08_0.pdf

Our Helpline can also send copies out to you in the post free of charge if that’s easier, as well as offering support and information, telephone 0808 800 6000 Mon to Fri 9am-5pm and Sat 9am-2pm.

Best wishes,

Hello Leighmcl,

I dont know much about the procedure at St Lukes, at my local hospital the leaflet that I got said if your under 35 you will be examined first by a consultant and then the test will be done. Over 35 you go straight to the x ray dept for mammogram then the radiologist decides to do the ultrasound. Im 44 and went last yr straight to xray for mammogram and they didnt do an ultrasound so this time (appt 2moro) I’m going to request I have one. Being NHS it might be a standard procedure but not sure some hospitals may have their own procdures. As for biopsy, I cant say that they will do one but with a lump I would imagine that they would do some needle biospy. Perhaps someone else would be able to advise you better on that.

I also have large breast aswell and they are also lumpy. But I dont have a lump this time I have a dimpling/indent. As for the waiting game one can occupie oneself with something everyday but it still at the back of your mind and it seems long way away but it soon comes round You take care now x

hi leigh

the procedure at my unit is everybody gets a breast exam first and then if your under 35 they will do the ultrasound first and if they can see something they will then do a mammo if they need more clarification… they can often tell from the US whether its a cyst as they have a specific look on US, some other benign conditions can mimic cancers so they would normally take a biopsy as standard if the lump is anything other than a cyst.

and even in some units they would aspirate if it was a cyst, although we dont routinely do that.

will be keeping my fingers crossed that its nothing serious

JJ will be thinking about you today hunny.

Hi Leigh
I had the examination first and then a mamo and an ultrasound. I am 39.
Like you I also had a hysterectomy young (22) but I was told that my lump could still be ‘hormonal’

Hope all goes well on the 14th

Thanks everyone for your support you’ve all been lovely. It really is the waiting thats horrid, I don’t sleep anyway as on strong pain killers for other issues and when I am finally sleeping, I’m dreaming and waking up thinking immediately of my lump - its like it has a pulse that is connected to my brain, which sounds daft I know and its purely psychological but definitely a stressful time.

lulu - thanks for your post about your unit, as I am just 35, I think they will probably do the mammogram 1st - although with big boobs, I’ll be honest I don’t like the sound of it, have heard it can be quite painful if you have big boobs or very small boobs, but I’ve had a lot worse, so I’ll be brave. The Us is on the form I’ve received so I know I’m having the 2 procedures, but on my letter its states a triple assessment so maybe that means the core biopsy of the lump if its not a cyst?

Lorien - Wow 22 to have you hysterectomy that is very young, hope you are ok now. At 39 I think they did the right thing to give you both mammogram and US as you are still so young and would have dense breast tissue. Did you not have to have a biopsy then? Did you have your ovaries removed when you had the big ‘h’ as if not that’ll be why they said that you could still have hormonal lumps.

JJ - have you received your results now? Thinking of you.

Hope everyone is ok, just trying to keep busy now this weekend until Mondays appointment. My hubbies is away working until next Friday so just me and the kids, but hopefully the weather will be nice so we can go out and enjoy. Nothing like a 4 year old girl and a 10 year old boy arguing to take your mind off worrying things!

Love to all

Leighxx

Hi Leigh

I had my ovaries out after my hyst (a few years later) and take oestrogen HRT.

My lump wasn’t biopsied as although it could be felt on examination it wasn’t anything suspicious on the mamo or US.

Hope all goes well
take care

Hi All

I had my mammogram and Us at the clinic this morning and everything is fine. Although there is a breast mass, they felt that it needed to be monitored and if it hardens and/or gets bigger in anyway they will do a biopsy then. So seeing them again in 6 months. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders, so happy! Although my boobs feel quite sore after the mammogram, it was honestly all ok, just a bit nerve racking whilst waiting.

Hoping that everyone else has good news and a big thank you to all of your support - women really do stick together and it never ceases to amaze me how complete strangers can often be such good friends in difficult times.

Lots of love to all -

Leigh
