i was diagnosed yesterday and had so much to take in. My tumour is 7cm with clusters. It’s is HER2 positive, I have no idea what this means.
The plan is Chemo, Herceptin, Surgery and Radio Therapy. I have no idea what stage my cancer is, how to prepare for chemo (if you can prepare) I have also had type 1 diabetes for over 40 years and I’m concerned about the chemo and blood sugars.
Hello floss and sorry you are here and fully understand how you are feeling. These forums you will find are amazing with lots of amazing ladies going through and have been through what we are going through and they/we are always here to help you through this roller coaster. I can’t help on the hers2 as mine was negative but I am sure someone will respond and help. Once your plan is in place from your consultant you will find things ease a little as you will know exactly what is happening. I am a few weeks ahead of you but saw your thread as I often come back here to read and hopefully just help if only a little. Do you have another appointment booked ? If and when you feel ready go to the going through treatment thread, April surgery and read the thread in there to myself and Jem. The ladies from the chemo thread came to our help last weekend when we were both struggling and not having good days. You may find it good reading as I did and helped a lot. Take care floss. We can beat this.
Its a lot to take in, and like a foreign language - a foreign language that sounds scary at that ! However, over the next few weeks, you will come to accept and move forward as your treatment plant progresses. I’m sure they will be having more discussions with you, and meetings, to give more information about your treatment plan. I hope also that they have dedicated a breast cancer nurse to you already - you know you can call them at any time for clarification, or queries. Calling the BCN is a good way to get messages through to the more senior medical team , and of course it is your right to request additional meetings to discuss and find out information.
Everybody reacts differently to their diagnosis, there is no right or wrong. It is a process rather like bereavement grief - there are steps to go through mentally. Numb, denial, fear, tears, anger, desperation…everything can be thrown into the mix…and nothing is wrong or right. You’ve kind of got to go through all that to get to the acceptance and more positive stage.
Thank you ALL so much for taking the time to reply to me.
I was told my plan yesterday, MRI, Oncology appointment, Chemo, Herceptin, Surgery and Radiotherapy. No hormone treatment is needed.
I did call phone the number I was given for the breast care nurse but it said to leave a message if you have a surgery problem or for results and call radio therapy if it’s to do with a mammogram or, call the consultants secretary for anything else. So, that’s what I did. She was very nice but unable to give me any answers.
I have literally just received a phone call to book the MRI for next Wednesday so that’s good and things seem to be moving quite quickly. My brain just needs to catch up with everything. ?
Hi Floss, My tumour is 6cm and in my lymph nodes, not sure yet if it has got any further. I too am HER positive. Not been given a game plan yet, having an MRI Mon. But I believe I will be having the same as you, in the same order. I have accessed a Living with Cancer course which will cover diet, lifestyle, exercise, maybe there is a course need you you can get to. Mine is being run by pennybrohn.org.uk it is free and you can take someone to support you. Stay in touch it appears our journies will be following the same time and course. Hugs Cazzy
Hi Floss, sorry you find yourself here but glad you found us and are able to get the support you need. The HER2 positive is a particular protein which has to be blocked with Herceptin. It’s a receptor which the cancer uses to grow so the good news for you is that there is a medication for blocking it. I’m sure your oncologist will discuss your diabetes with you before chemo starts so have faith. I always kept a little notepad and scribbled down all of my worries to share with my oncologist and he was lovely about answering everything. I’m now just over a year on since diagnosis after having the book thrown at me with treatment for a large tumour with lymph node involvement. I’m pleased to be here to tell my story and hope it helps you to get through this, here it is: lifeafterlola.blogspot.co.uk/. Best wishes to you. Xxx
lve had my MRI, no one told me about the CodLiver Oil capsules ? ?
the results came through today from my Breast surgeon. It confirms the original diagnosis and shows a small 9mm nodule in the right breast too which they say is highly likely to be benign !!!
Oncologist Wednesday next week, I’ve been told Chemo will start within 10 days following this appointment.
