Finding it hard to be positive now my treatment has finished

Have just finished 2 yrs treatment for Primary Her2Pos Breast Cancer. While on it I was upbeat and positive but now I panic everytime I get a twinge or feel off. I am also finding I have a very ‘short fuse’ and get really emotional at the slightest thing.
I’ve lost interest in things I enjoyed and feel very negative .My husband is planning
things for us but I have no enthusiasm. My oncologist has never given me a full
body scan and he says this is normal practice but I am so scared he’s missed
something. Is this normal? Should I have insisted that he gave me scan? I went
private for all my treatment and wonder if I would have been better on NHS.
On another topic, I have read that hair colourants are bad. Is this true?

Hi Kinty

I too have just finished my Onc told me that the time just after treatment can be hard emotionally. Can you get any help locally or call the BCC helpline?

I finished radiotherapy last week and have already been back to the Onc with a mystery pain in my hip. Like you I am a private patient. He has ordered a bone scan, not because he is worried but because he wants to rule it out. So they will do something if you have a specific complaint. It is quite normal for them not to do a full scan.

I do have peace, but I think that this is due to my faith. I have had people praying for me and would be happy to pray for you too - send a private message if you wouuld like this. Life is for living and not worrying. I hope that you can start to enjoy things soon.

It is not uncommon to feel this way. Have you been “signed off”? If so, then my advice is that you must deliberately and firmly put cancer at the bottom of your priorities and get on with life. Go with your husband, make an effort to enjoy. Life is for living.

Can you and he go away for a good holiday doing something you both like and quite unrelated to your treatment?

No, hair colourants are not all bad. Talk to your hairdresser. Ask for his/her advice on what you can or shouldn’t use.

Hi Kinty,As Phoebe says its not uncommon to worry over every ache and pain after your treatment has finished- you’ve more time to worry about the ‘what ifs’ now.Don’t get yourself into the habit.Start as you mean to go on and put the past two years well and truely behind you…Good luck… and if you are at all worried about using hair dyes why dont you try Naturetint. You can get it in Holland and Barrett,It’s a permanent herbal hair dye and it’s paraben free ( Nothing nasty in it) Its easily as good as anything else on the market!
