First Rad tomorrow - any tips?

Hi All,

I have my first Rad tomorrow and Im a little nervous. I know it will be a walk in the park compared to chemo and I have been told I will be tired too.

Do you have to refrain from wearing deoderant?

Im worrying about being sore/burnt. Nurse said as Im large busted I will burn underneath so i should try to go without a bra - yeah right! Im still working and cannot go without as I will scare half my candidates away!LOL

Any tips/handy hints would be grateful.

Thanks in advance

Hi Karen,

Thanks for that, Ive been given a gown I can keep so I am guessing once I get there I will just have to slip in to that.

Best Wishes with the rest of your treatment.

Yes, you do have to refrain from wearing deoderant. Although they recommend not to use any at all while you’re having rads, I did, one that was aluminium free and un-perfumed but didn’t use it before I had a rad. I used to rub Aqueous cream into my boob before a rad and then again afterwards. The radiographers will tell you to make sure you use moisturiser cream liberally throughout the day. I never had any soreness at all through 15 sessions of rads, nor after. I still use copious amounts of moisturiser cream now… 5 months later.

I had 30 sessions and I did burn underneath but if you do you will be given appropriate creams or gels to use and dressings as well, so don’t worry. Use aqueous cream several times a day and if you can go without a bra for part of the day, eg in the evening, try to do so. I used aloe vera gel instead of aqueous cream some of the time but you need to check as some hospitals are ok with this and some are not. If you do use it it needs to be over 95%.
You continue to “cook” for 2 weeks after you finish treatment but after that, my burns healed up amazingly quickly.
The radiographers will probably give you lots of advice at your first session.

Good luck

Hiya Lynne
I have just had 13 of 25 rads and am burning a bit but as the others say use loads of aqueous cream all through the day. My rads nurse said absolutely no deodorant not even aluminum free ones and only to use simple soap. I am big busted but am wearing vests I got from Mand S which have a hidden support in them so I am not scaring too many people!! Just dont be afraid to ask if anythung worries you and you will be fine.
Best wishes
Hilary

I’m big breasted too and if I have to go most of the time braless I’m going to be getting very smelly and very sore underneath just from NOT having the bra on…

I will see how I go, but my plan for now is just to wear them when I’m out but go brafree around the house.
